Erna Moller speaking to reporter\u003cbr/\u003eUS citizens Mario R Capecchi and Oliver Smithies and Briton Sir Martin J Evans won the 2007 Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday for ground-breaking stem cell discoveries that led to a technology known as gene targeting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe three scientists modified the DNA of mice in so-called \"knockout\" experiments that have advanced the understanding of the relationship between genes and a range of human ailments, including cystic fibrosis, cancer and high blood pressure.\u003cbr/\u003eThe winning laureates were announced at the Nobel Forum headquarters in Stockholm. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute has today decided to award the Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2007 jointly to: Mario Capecchi, Martin Evans and Oliver Smithies,\" Hans Jornvall, the Nobel Committee Secretary announced. \u003cbr/\u003eThe citation from the Nobel award committee said the three winners of the coveted 10 (m) million kronor (1.5 (m) million US dollar) prize had discovered \"principles for introducing specific gene modification in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe researchers used \"knockout mice\" - animals whose genetic code has been altered in the lab to either turn on or off certain genes that mice and humans share.\u003cbr/\u003eCapecchi, 70, was born in Verona, Italy, and moved to the United States with his mother - a Holocaust survivor - after World War II. \u003cbr/\u003eHe did work that \"shed light on the cause of several human inborn malformations,\" the prize citation said, while Evans, 66, applied gene targeting to develop mouse models for human diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eSmithies, 82, born in Britain, also used gene targeting to develop mouse models for inherited diseases such as cystic fibrosis and the blood disease thalassemia, and other diseases such as hypertension and atherosclerosis.\u003cbr/\u003eAll three were informed early Monday that they had won the prize.\u003cbr/\u003eErna Moller, a Nobel Committee member, said \"It's never something that happens in a year, usually you spend many years, many investigations in the committee, the assembly abroad, so the work is very careful. But you don't give a prize unless you realise that this has become of extreme importance to mankind.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe citation said gene targeting has pervaded all fields of biomedicine.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough gene targeting uses embryonic stem cells from mice, the research is very different from how stem cells would be used to treat disease in humans. \u003cbr/\u003eIn people, stem cells would be prodded to become replacement tissue like nerve cells for transplant into patients.\u003cbr/\u003eThe issue of human stem cell research has been polarising in the United States but not to that extent in Europe, where it is seen as a tool to advance the understanding of fighting disease.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006, US President George W Bush rejected legislation to allow funding of additional lines of embryonic stem cells - a measure that passed over the objections of Republicans then in control of the US Congress.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medicine prize was the first of the six prestigious awards to be announced this year. The others are chemistry, physics, literature, peace and economics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe prizes are handed out every year on December 10, the anniversary of award founder Alfred Nobel's death in
