Tilt up on exterior of BB King's restaurant on Beale Street \u003cbr/\u003eThe Mississippi River crested in the US city of Memphis, Tennessee, at nearly 48 feet (14.63 metres) early on Tuesday, falling short of its all-time record but still soaking low-lying areas with enough water to require a massive cleanup.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US National Weather Service said the river reached 47.85 feet (14.58 metres) at 2 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Tuesday, and was expected to stay very close to that level for the next 24 to 36 hours. \u003cbr/\u003eThe water levels had peaked which meant the worst was over in the area, but it will take weeks for the water to recede and much longer for inundated areas to recover. \u003cbr/\u003eThe soaking was confined to low-lying neighbourhoods, and forced hundreds of people from their homes - including nearly 500 in shelters on Tuesday - but no new serious flooding was expected. \u003cbr/\u003eIn many neighbourhoods, foul-smelling water approached the roofs of homes, and plastic bottles, rubbish bins and rotting tree limbs floated on top.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents said they'd spotted snakes and fish in the water, and officials warned of bacteria.\u003cbr/\u003eSurrounding Shelby County and four others were declared disaster areas by US President Barack Obama, which means that they'll be eligible for much-needed federal disaster aid.\u003cbr/\u003eThe main tourist attractions and music studios in Memphis were not threatened by the floods.\u003cbr/\u003eThey included Sun Studio, where singer Elvis Presley made some of his recordings, and Stax Records, which launched the careers of Otis Redding and the Staple Singers.\u003cbr/\u003eGraceland, Presley's former estate several miles south of downtown, was in no danger either, nor was the legendary blues strip of Beale Street. \u003cbr/\u003eBy Tuesday morning, high-water marks were visible on concrete posts, indicating that water levels had decreased slightly. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It could have been a lot worse.  Levees could have broke,\" said Memphis resident Janice Harbin, 32. \"I'm very fortunate to just stand out here and see it and not be a victim of the flood.\" \u003cbr/\u003eBecause of heavy rain over the past few weeks and snowmelt along the upper reaches of the Mississippi, the river has broken high-water records upstream and inundated low-lying towns and farmland. \u003cbr/\u003eThe water on the Mississippi is so high that the rivers and creeks that feed into it are backed up, and that has accounted for some of the worst of the flooding so far.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Memphis crest was below the record of 48.7 feet (14.84 metres) recorded during a devastating 1937 flood. \u003cbr/\u003eThe slow-moving water was heading downstream to Mississippi and Louisiana, where residents were bracing
