It's a lot of work, and at the moment there are good intentions but almost nothing was recovered (meaning that almost nothing was de-polluted),\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eAcross the ocean, South Africans had similar ambitions for the legacy projects following their own World Cup tournament in 2010. \u003cbr/\u003eBut after spending more than three billion (b) US dollars, South Africa gained in return an \"intangible legacy\" from Africa's first world soccer showpiece according to a government report. \u003cbr/\u003eSome critics believe the huge investment for the 30-day sports event turned out to be impractical for South Africa, a country plagued by severe inequalities between the rich and the poor.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country was also rocked by violent protests over service delivery last year, as frustrated citizens vent their anger on unfulfilled promises. \u003cbr/\u003eSouth Africa's government said it spent 1.1 billion US dollars on building and upgrading stadiums alone, 1.3 billion US dollars on improving road, rail and air links and a further 392 million US dollars on the country's main ports of entry.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the expensive World Cup stadiums are still underused and most of them are losing money. \u003cbr/\u003eCommunities living around Mbombela stadium in Nelspurit, a 2010 host city, are still living without the running water facilities they were promised, four years after the competition took place.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the Cape Town Stadium - reportedly the most expensive of the seven new venues at 600 million US dollars - is in the most trouble and the local authorities said they are considering shutting it down.\u003cbr/\u003eSome say that the money spent on the World Cup could have been better spent on the country's social amenities.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We still have in Kliptown, which is less than three kilometres away from the FNB Stadium, we still have people going to the toilet in a bucket and it's 2014, it's an outrage,\" says Dr Dale McKinley, a Johannesburg based independent researcher.  \u003cbr/\u003eBack in Rio, one demonstrator summed up the feelings of the many during a recent violent disturbance.
