rate, and heavy traffic, the London Ambulance Service has introduced cycling paramedics into it's fleet.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a bid to reduce call-out times, the paramedic team peddles around central London, ready at all times to attend to minor emergencies.\u003cbr/\u003eMartin Doddymeed and Jon Titley are the UK's first cycling paramedics.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe London Ambulance Service runs a Cycle Response Unit to assist the ambulance crews in the congested streets of central London.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the medics, Martin Doddymeed, says they cover all areas of the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe team is highly visible in their fluorescent vests and black uniforms.\u003cbr/\u003eThey carry the majority of their kit in bicycle panniers - on the front and back of the bikes.\u003cbr/\u003eJon Titley is the other half of the cycling paramedic team.\u003cbr/\u003eA former Royal Marine, Titley says the job is perfect for him as he was keen to use his medical skills and work outside,\u003cbr/\u003eThe cycle response teams are also cost effective.\u003cbr/\u003eA new ambulance costs �80,000 (US$150,000) with a daily fuel cost of �100 (US$180) in central London, but the new bicycle ambulance costs only �1000 (US$1,800) fully equipped with no daily running costs.\u003cbr/\u003eDoddymeed says the team uses top of the range mountain bikes.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the bikes do have a few additional features such as white lights, blue flashing lights and a siren.\u003cbr/\u003eIn central London an ambulance can take up too eight minutes to reach an accident, but the team says cycling paramedics take on average only three to five minutes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe squad answers around six calls every day, and the Ambulance Service says they have been able to cancel 50 per cent of the call outs in central London as the cycling team has done the job for them.\u003cbr/\u003eParamedics are equipped with a radio and mobile phones for communications.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medical dispatchers are based at the Ambulance Service headquarters in Waterloo, south London, and inform the cyclists of any emergencies.\u003cbr/\u003eJon Titley says people have been very positive about the cycling team.\u003cbr/\u003eTourists in the city certainly seemed to be impressed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe paramedic team is both keen on sport and keeping fit, which is important considering on
