A group of Sufi...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eAs Egypt's new president sets about making his mark, Sufi Muslims say they're hoping for a new era of religious tolerance in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say they faced increased levels of persecution following the 2011 revolution. \u003cbr/\u003eA group of Sufi Muslims dance and sing through the streets of Alexandria, making the most of a new-found freedom to practice their religion how they want. \u003cbr/\u003eSufis, who trace their origins to the roots of Islam itself about 1,500 years ago, follow a mystical and moderate form of Islam. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has traditionally been popular in Egypt, with some 15 million people in the country of 90 million belonging to dozens of Sufi orders. \u003cbr/\u003eSufis say the figure is likely to be even higher since many who practice it are not registered with orders.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Sufism is clarity, love and isolation,\" says Sufi leader, Mohamed Essam Eldin Ahmed.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter Egypt's 2011 revolution, which saw the Muslim Brotherhood eventually rise to power, Sufis say they faced increased persecution by the more conservative followers of Islam. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They oppressed everyone, the whole population, they closed the doors that gave people a chance to express themselves, so the people got depressed. I am telling you that last year the percentage of people who got depressed increased due to Muslim Brotherhood rule,\" says Eldin. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group has often clashed with hardline Muslims - such as Salafis - who see Sufis' mysticism and practises as heretical. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafis are the same, they both label Sufis as infidels,\" says Abdullah al-Nasser Helmy, Secretary-General of the Union of Sufis in Egypt.\u003cbr/\u003eHard-liners were emboldened and given a freer hand after the 2011 fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak - and attacks on Sufi shrines escalated.\u003cbr/\u003eOne particular sticking point was the Mawalid - a mass Sufi celebration of the Saints' birthdays. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They tried to stop the Mawalid (Sufi celebration of the birthdays of saints) and sessions taking place in mosques. In general, they tried to stop the Sufis from practicing their beliefs,\" says Helmy. \u003cbr/\u003eHard-liners view Sufis' reverence for Saints and holy men - and for the shrines where they are buried - as idolatrous. \u003cbr/\u003eMubarak's successor, the Islamist Mohammed Morsi, was overthrown by the army following mass protests against his rule.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was the country's first elected president and hails from the Muslim Brotherhood.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore being voted into power earlier this year, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi met with representatives of the Sufi community in Egypt and vowed to protect their religious freedoms if elected. \u003cbr/\u003eEl-Sissi has now been president since June and Sufi Muslims - as they reflect on their oppression under the former administration - are hopeful that their lives will change under Egypt's new leader. \u003cbr/\u003eAP Television\u003cbr/\u003eAlexandria, Egypt - 30 August 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
