Robert Torricelli\u003cbr/\u003eLast month, House Speaker Newt Gingrich demanded Torricelli's resignation after the Democrat from New Jersey sent a letter to President Bill Clinton accusing the C-I-A of covering up the murders of  an American citizen and a Guatemalan guerrilla leader.\u003cbr/\u003eGingrich said that Torricelli broke his oath not to reveal classified information by disclosing secret C-I-A activities.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Torricelli countered by saying that his actions were completely legal and challenged the CIA to tell the truth.\u003cbr/\u003e\"That every American has an obligation under the laws of the United States not to participate in conspiracies to contain criminal activity. The principal oath of every member of Congress is to the laws and the Constitution of the United States.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Rep. Robert Torricelli\u003cbr/\u003eColonel Julio Roberto Alpirez has been accused of masterminding the killings of Michael Devine and Efrain Bamaca.\u003cbr/\u003eHe allegedly committed the crimes while he was on the C-I-A payroll.\u003cbr/\u003eTorricelli says he revealed the information for moral reasons and suggested that the killing of American citizens in Guatemala outweighed the confidential nature of intelligence information.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There's no national security information at stake. On issues regarding Colonel Alpirez, this information is classified to protect the reputations of CIA officials who violated the law and the interests of the American people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Rep. Robert Torricelli\u003cbr/\u003eTorricelli claims he never had access to classified information related to the C-I-A's covert operations in Guatemala. He alleges he got the information from several members of the Clinton administration.\u003cbr/\u003eJennifer Harbury, the widow of Efrain Bamaca, drew public attention to the case through hunger strikes in Guatemala and in front of the White House. She accused the C-I-A of covering up for the Guatemalan military leaders who allegedly tortured and killed her husband.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the time of Michael Devine's death, Col.  Alpirez was the director of an elite military school near the Peten base in northern Guatemala. Devine's body was found a few miles from Peten.\u003cbr/\u003eAlpirez denies any wrongdoing claiming he is a victim of the circumstances. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has been revealed that the C-I-A continued to financially support the Guatemalan military even after President George Bush cancelled the aid package to Guatemala.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Bill Clinton says he did not know the aid continued after it was suspended.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Torricelli says such information cannot be held and the C-I-A must not support the Guatemalan military's activities.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A hundred and ten thousand people have died in the civil war in Guatemala, where indigenous people fight for the right to speak their language, have their local leaders recognised and their land protected.
