Wide shot of company representatives with Tobovie-X Robot in foreground\u003cbr/\u003eFour of Japan's leading robot startups joined forces on Wednesday, brought together by a common concern that neighbouring South Korea could pull ahead in the race to transform robots from science fiction fantasy to commercial success.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan, which has long led the world in robo-technology, has created machines that can clean, dance, greet, feed, monitor, relax and befriend. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for all the buzz, so-called \"intelligent service robots\" have been slow to penetrate the average home, which is still more likely to shell out money for the latest flat screen TV than a pricey humanoid.\u003cbr/\u003eTokyo's ZMP, Nagoya's Business Design Laboratory, Osaka's Vstone and Fukuoka's Tmsuk said that new South Korean robot legislation passed earlier this year compelled them to form the \"Association for market creation of the future generation robots\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe aim of the association was to cooperate in research, development and marketing, the firms said.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter a decade of working in isolation, Japanese robot startups now need a broader, more-agressive front to push products to mass market, said Yoichi Takamoto, chief executive of Tmsuk and chair of the newly formed group.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We believe household robots will finally become common in the near future. Within five years, the number of robots will increase tenfold or more. We hope to increase the number of robots to 20 or 30 thousand,\" added Takamoto, whose company makes the \"Roborior\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe 27-hundred US dollars robot - a white, mobile orb on wheels - helps keep watch over empty homes and offices.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korea has embraced robotics with unparalleled national zeal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government is aiming to put a robot in every household by 2020 and has mobilised companies and scientists to help integrate robots into Korean society. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country plans to build two robot theme parks by 2013 and even drafted a \"Robot Ethics Code\" last year to prevent robot-human abuse.\u003cbr/\u003eIn February, the National Assembly passed a bill to spur development and marketing of intelligent robots. \u003cbr/\u003eThe law also established investment firms to provide financial support for robotics manufacturers.\u003cbr/\u003eFaced with low birth rates and long life spans, both Japan and South Korea are aging quickly and are turning to robots to replace disappearing workers as well as care for the elderly. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Japanese government paints a dire picture. \u003cbr/\u003eBy 2040, children will comprise 9.3 percent of Japan's population, while the over-65 population will balloon to 36.5 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Japan has also funded a variety of robotics-related projects, it's been a quieter road for the country's consumer robot revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eTakamoto said the new group would initially focus on expanding the market for simple service robots designed to \"hedge risk\" - keep grandma and grandpa engaged with life, monitor pets, watch children.\u003cbr/\u003eThe firms pointed to Business Design Laboratory's moonwalker-like \"ifbot\" and ZMP's \"nuvo\" companion as especially popular with seniors in Japan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe robot association's new headquarters will be in Nagoya, site of the 2005 Aichi Expo and headquarters of Business Design Laboratory.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan is the leader in both the industrial and service robotics industry and robotics revolution is an imperative in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the past several years, the government has funded a plethora of robotics-related efforts, including some 42 (m) million US dollars for the first phase of a humanoid robotics project and 10 (m) million US dollars a year between 2006 and 2010 to develop key robot technologies.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe government estimates the industry could surge from about 5.2 (b) billion US dollars in 2006 to 26 (b) billion US dollars in 2010 and nearly 70 (b) billion
