Those looking skyward were careful to use special filters to protect their eyes. It was the first time the phenomenon was visible in Japan since 1839.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the western part of the US people held viewing parties, and some traveled long distances to get to the best vantage points in the desert.\u003cbr/\u003eit was the last chance North America had to witness such a solar eclipse for some years.
