the fastest growing sectors of the country's booming tourism industry is luxury river cruises which allow passengers to see the real Cambodia but in some comfort. \u003cbr/\u003eJust a few years ago, the only boats you were likely to see on the Mekong River in Cambodia were small fishing boats. \u003cbr/\u003eToday however, at least three international cruise companies are operating ships in Cambodia, offering passengers to chance to experience the underdeveloped country in some comfort. \u003cbr/\u003eThe latest ship to join the fleet is the 700 tons, 58-metre long deluxe river boat the Jayavarman, built in 2009 by Vietnam based shipping company Heritage Line.\u003cbr/\u003eNamed after Jayavarman 7th, a revered Cambodian Buddhist king, the ship is a replica of the famous 1930s cruise liner \"Normandie\" and is built in the art nouveau style popular at that time. \u003cbr/\u003eHeritage Line describes the ship as \"a fusion of traditional eastern shipbuilding craft and avant-garde French colonial design overlaid with state of the art technology.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt a cruising speed of ten nautical knots the ship can cover the 500km river journey from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, to Siem Reap, Cambodia, in just 8 days.     \u003cbr/\u003eThe Jayavarman can accommodate up to 54 guests at a time, who are looked after by 40 Cambodian staff and Vietnamese crew.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile especially popular with retirees, young people too enjoy the experience says head tour guide Khim Rihty.\u003cbr/\u003eBelow decks, the Jayavarman is decorated in the French colonial Indochine style incorporating a strong Cambodian influence.  \u003cbr/\u003eAttention is paid to every detail. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are 27 carefully designed rooms on board with floor to ceiling sliding glass doors leading onto a small private balcony. \u003cbr/\u003eMeals are prepared onboard using fresh locally sourced ingredients and are heavily infused with Cambodian and Vietnamese influences. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ship's restaurant serves a buffet for breakfast and lunch and an a la carte menu for dinner. \u003cbr/\u003eOne big difference between ocean cruises and river cruises is that riverboats can pull over almost anywhere.\u003cbr/\u003e The Jayavarman regularly ties up on the riverbank allowing passengers to explore the surrounding area at close quarters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe passengers get to meet the local people and see how they live.\u003cbr/\u003eAt this silk weaving village outside Phnom Penh bargain hunters can buy handmade silk cloth for a fraction of what they would pay at home.\u003cbr/\u003eThe passengers visit some of the ancient temples found along the river where they learn about Cambodia's rich heritage. \u003cbr/\u003eWherever they go, a local welcoming committee is ready to roll out the red carpet.\u003cbr/\u003eFor many passengers it is their encounters with the local people that leaves a lasting impression says Cruise Director Win Min.\u003cbr/\u003eA standard 8 day cruise on the Jayavarman will set you back 3,800 US dollars in low season to around 5,400 US dollars in  high season for a standard double
