The festival offers a snapshot of current trends in contemporary performing arts, holds workshops for the public and even funds a resident artist, thanks to generous grants from the French government.\u003cbr/\u003eThe theme of the 2000 festival was collaboration across disciplines, as the live arts struggle to keep their audience and appeal to new generations.\u003cbr/\u003eChoreographer HERVE ROBBE, a trained architect and the director of the Le Havre centre of choreography, presented an audiovisual installation, prior to a live performance of a work developed with director CHRISTIAN BOUSTANI and composer ANDREA CERA.  The work examines how the body interacts with the confined space of a theatre.  Hardly a mass appeal surefire hit, but representative of the current tendency in the performing arts to produce work about their own genres.\u003cbr/\u003eAmerican TRISHA BROWN, a former artist, has a long career stretching back 30 years and is hailed as one of the originators of modern dance.  Brown has worked with artists Robert Rouchenburg and Laurie Anderson, composer John Cage and many others, developing her own language of movement which her dancers are then free to interpret.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis year, Brown and company have also gone all out for collaboration, working with composer Dave Douglas.  But not everything went smoothly: just hours before the \"New Jazz Trilogy\" was due to have its French premiere, the dancers were still working on the final touches.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dancers usually work to pre-recorded scores, but with Douglas, they encountered problems synchronising the free movements of the dancers with the equally free timings of the jazz musicians.  But Brown was happy her company could work it out for themselves.  As an artist who now wants to explore other disciplines, she told APTN what she thinks her audience expects, and what she can get away with.\u003cbr/\u003eDutch artist JAN LAUWERS is an accomplished painter and draughtsman who decided to work in theatre for 5 years, after becoming frustrated with the constraints of the 1970s conceptual contemporary art scene.  Fifteen years later, his work with dancers from the Frankfurt Ballet and his own Need company have convinced him that live work can compete for an audience weaned on television and the internet.\u003cbr/\u003eAll artists at the October Festival have to make their work \"accessible\" to their audiences, holding workshops, answering questions and discussing their work. \u003cbr/\u003eThe October Festival starts at the end of September each year and runs until the end of October.  It is held in Dieppe, Le Havre and Rouen, as well as other smaller towns with performance venues.  The festival is paid for by the French government.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
