But what makes the situation in Ranong so different from any other boom town is the tenants themselves. They''''re not young couples or wealthy professionals - they''''re birds.\u003cbr/\u003eEvening falls in the town of Ranong. \u003cbr/\u003eTime for the markets to close and everyone to go home. But it isn''''t just the humans who have somewhere cosy to return to. \u003cbr/\u003eAcross this southern Thai town of 70-thousand residents, homes for birds stand side by side with homes for people. This isn''''t due to an excessive love for wildlife; this is business. These birds are swiftlets and they have a particular talent; they build edible nests. You''''ve heard of that Chinese delicacy \"bird''''s nest soup\" - these are the birds that provide the raw material. One kilogramme of these small, brittle, woven homes can fetch 1,200 US dollars (900 Euros) from eager epicureans, so, if you''''ve got the right property and you can coax the swiftlets to take up residence, you''''re made. \u003cbr/\u003eThe result is a construction boom. Specially designed \"bird condominiums\" are going up at a dizzying pace, paid for by investors with \"get rich quick\" dreams. Two years ago there were just 20 in Ranong. Today there are 100 of these windowless, multi-storey towers.\u003cbr/\u003eSomchai Maneemontakarn is Ranong''''s man-in-the-know, its \"Mr Big\" of bird condominiums. He has 2 of his own and has built 9 for others, including this one on the edge of town, which has a price tag of 3 (m) million baht or 100,000 US dollars (75,000 Euros).\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the key is to mimic the conditions of a cave, the swiftlets'''' favourite home. That means near-total darkness and high humidity. The holes in the wall are not for light; they''''re for air, and will be covered with plastic tubes when the condo is ready to receive its residents. After that all the hopeful investor can do is wait.    \u003cbr/\u003eSomchai explains: \"Once the building is finished the birds come in through the entrance over there and they fly in and usually land on the speakers. The birds are lured by recordings of swiftlets in full song. Get the song wrong and they stay away. Those who get it right keep the songs they use a secret.   \u003cbr/\u003eRanong is a port town, just a short voyage from Myanmar where huge numbers of the swiftlets live in sea caves. Over the years they''''ve moved into the town, attracted by the abundant food found among the local mangrove forests. The challenge has been to get them from the canopies to the condos.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe money spent, this is where the lucky investor finally gets payback. Every month condo owners, like Somchai, collect the precious nests. Ignoring the insects, the smell and the humidity, he leaves the ones that have eggs or baby birds, and takes the others. The birds will build a new one within a month, and so the cycle starts again.   \u003cbr/\u003eTo gourmets these delicate nests are worth every cent. They''''re held together by the birds'''' saliva and that''''s the ingredient they want in their soup bowls. They believe it brings physical and sexual good health. To Somchai it brings wealth. He collects an average of  22 pounds (10 kilogrammes) of nests per month - an income of 12,000 US dollars (9,000 Euros).\u003cbr/\u003eAtiwat Rukchu is a lawyer who wants in. He already has a rubber plantation but this is something else. Somchai is designing his condo. Atiwat''''s been convinced by the low maintenance cost but most of all by the quick investment returns.\u003cbr/\u003eAtiwat says: \"I can get money back from a bird condo within a year of it being finished. On top of that, I can get much more for birds nests than for rubber,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThat''''s great for him, but what about those who live beside the condos, enduring the recorded sound of singing swiftlets all day long? Some talk of headaches. Shop worker Duranee Sangcham lives in a house that has a bird condo on the top two storeys. She''''s not a fan, but has learned to cope.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"At first I wasn''''t used to it because it was really loud. I couldn''''t sleep. But now I''''m used to it\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe journey from condo to consumer ends in places like this: the bustling Chinatown district in Bangkok. Here its many restaurants sell a range of swiftlet products like small jars of drink, but the classic is birds'''' nest soup. It takes just a few minutes to make; mix hot water, sugar and bird saliva and 1000 baht or 33 US dollars (24 Euros) later you have what you crave - a delicacy that began in a dark, humid concrete
