It would be in an apartment or a flat, and it would have revolved around cocktails or small parties where you had elegantly dressed people celebrating in a rather refined way. The decorations are quite tasteful and subdued, very little real greenery coming in from outdoors. Exterior Geffrye Museum.\u003cbr/\u003eChristmas is being celebrated though the ages at a new exhibition at a London museum.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Geffrye Museum in London's East End the festive season past and present by recreating living rooms decorated in the style of the various historical eras. \u003cbr/\u003eHighlights include the Victorian period when Christmas trees and cards became popular and the sparse yet stylish 1930's when cocktails were all the rage.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the rich traditions and customs associated with Christmas in England are forgotten amid the hustle and bustle of the modern festive season. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever the Geffrye Museum in London's East End, has set out to rekindle some of the magic of Christmas by decorating its eleven period rooms in authentic festive style. \u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition - called 'Christmas Past'  - gives visitors the chance to experience what Christmas would have looked and felt like in English homes over the past 400 years.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was during the reign of Queen Victoria that many English Christmas customs first became widespread especially the practice of  decorating a fir tree in the home. \u003cbr/\u003eThis room is a middle class Victorian drawing room of the 1850s. \u003cbr/\u003eThe room is dominated by the Christmas tree, which the family have decorated with candles, toy instruments and animals, flags and baskets of sweets. \u003cbr/\u003eThe children's presents are placed beneath the tree ready for Christmas morning. \u003cbr/\u003eChristine Lalumia is the Deputy Director of the Geffrye Museum. She explains that it was around this time that the fir tree and the exchanging of cards became associated with Christmas in England - aswell as parlour games.\u003cbr/\u003eQueen Victoria's German born husband Prince Albert's popularised the German custom of Christmas trees in England. \u003cbr/\u003eThe royal family had a Christmas tree at Windsor every year after the couple's marriage in 1840. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly a century later and Christmas has gone through a radical change. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a more sparse 1930's modernist style, with an artificial tree of tinsel. \u003cbr/\u003eLalumia says that cocktail parties would have been very popular during this time and that people would have celebrated in a more refined way.\u003cbr/\u003eFor each era the museum imagines the home of a typical London couple or family. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the 1930s room the scene is set for a glamorous cocktail party. \u003cbr/\u003eArtificial decorations were popular during this period especially in urban homes, as they were cleaner and it saved the expense of buying greenery from a market or florists. \u003cbr/\u003eChristmas trees, whether real or artificial were, on the whole, now lit by electric tree lights. The paper lanterns reflect the fashion of the time for all things Japanese. \u003cbr/\u003eThe period towards the end of the twentieth century is called labelled Christmas Present. \u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibit imagines a Christmas celebrated by a middle class thirty-something couple. \u003cbr/\u003eThis imaginary couple may have some friends over for Christmas dinner, typically young couples who work in publishing, the media or design, or have jobs in finance. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Christmas evening they may sit down and watch some of the films they have videoed over the last week, or read the books they were given for Christmas and listen to their new CDs. \u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition sparks memories for some of the museum's older visitors. \u003cbr/\u003eGeradine Hall says that she was interested to see how Christmas seemed more elaborate in the past. \u003cbr/\u003eAlex Sinclair says she enjoyed seeing the different kinds of food people have eaten through the centuries.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Patricia Hall, some parts of the exhibition were very close to home. She says that she is reminded of some familiar sights from her own life.\u003cbr/\u003e'Christmas Past - 400 Years of Seasonal Traditions in English Homes' is on at the The Geffrye Museum in London
