We are here  today to celebrate the successful achievement of our national goals and objectives, the  implementation of our development policies and programmes, the fulfilment of the  aspirations of our people and promotion of our collective well being and happiness.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Jigme Singye Wangchuck , King of Bhutan\u003cbr/\u003eThe royal procession also included traditional performers from the 20 districts of\u003cbr/\u003eBhutan, who danced their way to a huge sports stadium in the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of Bhutanese people had gathered to wish pay tribute to their beloved  monarch.\u003cbr/\u003eThe King shares a special relationship with his people.\u003cbr/\u003eKnown to lead an austere life himself, he often mingles with the public to keep in touch  with the people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bhutanese see him as a charismatic leader who has transformed the country's\u003cbr/\u003epolitics, economy and society to a modern nation state, while maintaining their  traditional values. \u003cbr/\u003eBhutan is often seen as a living museum with one foot in the past.\u003cbr/\u003eBut both traditional and modern influences blend in nearly every aspect of life of this  country of 600-thousand people.\u003cbr/\u003eEven as the country opens up its doors to outside influences, men and women are\u003cbr/\u003erequired to wear traditional dress, and the architecture conforms to orthodox styles\u003cbr/\u003edecorated with religious symbols.\u003cbr/\u003eThe past year has seen many radical changes in Bhutan's political and administrative  system.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1998 the King gave the country's legislature the power to fire him, and awarded   parliament the right to choose his Cabinet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe reforms came as a shock to many who saw them as sharply curtailing the powers  of the 92-year-old monarchy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe newly formed national assembly is due to meet later this month and is likely to  reflect whether opposition to political reforms outweighs its supporters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe King, however, is convinced that a move towards democracy is inevitable and is\u003cbr/\u003epushing for more decentralisation of power.\u003cbr/\u003eThimpu, Bhutan - June 2, 1999 \u003cbr/\u003eDay\u003cbr/\u003e1.
