There were a lot of artificial problems over how this project would effect the environment of the Lower Danube, including the Danube biosphere preserve. But it was implemented so well, that there was not a single serious accident or negative impact on the all the elements of the hydro system, from hydrology to birds and animals, because the project was developed very clearly in line with all the environmental norms.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe construction of dams in the 20th century has reduced the water flow in the Danube dramatically, according to environmentalists like Oleksander Volovshkevich, the director of the Danube Biosphere Reserve: \u003cbr/\u003e\"We lost a great quantity of water, the hydrological regime of our waters and in a number of channels has worsened significantly. On the whole, the Ukrainian Danube delta is rapidly deteriorating\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eHere the river forms a natural boundary between Ukraine and Romania as Major Serhiy Adamchuk, head of the local Ukrainian Border Guard explains:  \"Romania is located the right bank of the Old Stambul bed of the Danube there is Romania and Ukraine on the left.  The main difficulty in keeping the Danube safe is the poor accessibility of this region, which we must safeguard. Because the border runs along the river, we need special equipment to safeguard it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBorder guards are on duty in speedboats to check the boats and their passengers. Visas are not required, but travellers need to give their personal details to  border staff, but they are not permitted to land on the shores of the country that they are not resident. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal residents and fishermen also report potential violations to the border guards. \u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years Russian tourists have been discovering the beauty and wildlife of the Ukrainian Danube Delta, often enjoying a pleasure boat cruise of the Danube Biosphere Reserve. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir goal - to see the \"zero\" kilometre sign of the Danube. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sign \"0 km\" is set  where the Danube flows into the Black Sea at Ochakov Way. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Pelican tour\" operator Mykhailo Zhmud was one of the first to develop the tourism on the Ukrainian side of the Danube. \u003cbr/\u003e\"For the Ukrainian Danube delta, the development of green tourism is one of the possibilities of pouring new strength into the economy of the region. For a long time, this territory was kept closed for visitors, there was a quite strict border regime here and visiting delta territories was practically impossible, even on paper.
