Close of student laying down on bed\u003cbr/\u003eMedical students in Germany are donning an age suit to see what it feels like to be elderly. \u003cbr/\u003eThe suit mimics vision and hearing loss as well as mobility problems.\u003cbr/\u003ePicking up coins is something most people do without thinking.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for elderly people an everyday task can often become a burden.\u003cbr/\u003eThe loss of flexibility in the joints, and a loss of eyesight, can mean this simple action can be tiring and take a long time to achieve.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is where the \"age suit\" come into play.\u003cbr/\u003eThe German Meyer-Hentschel Institut developed it in 1995, and the latest version came out in 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far it has been used when developing cars and to give bus and train drivers an idea of what it is like to be old.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now Berlin's University Clinic Charite has started using the suit in their training of medical students, in cooperation with Berlin's Evangelisches Geriatriezentrum specialised clinic for the care of elderly people.\u003cbr/\u003eSince October 2011 around 100 students have used the suit, all getting a feel for what it is like for an elderly person.\u003cbr/\u003eRahel Eckardt is the senior physician for geriatric medicine at the Evangelisches Geriatriezentrum in the German capital.\u003cbr/\u003eShe explains how it works:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The whole suit weighs about 10 kilograms, this is to simulate that older people have less muscle power and less muscle mass. We also have the helmet and the visor that makes it harder to see and to differentiate between colours. And we have the headphones that simulate how older people can have difficulties hearing,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe class is not compulsorily but Eckardt still expects around 200 students to use the suit each year.\u003cbr/\u003eEven putting on the suit is hard; it takes at least two people to dress the student with the weights around the torso and the joints.\u003cbr/\u003eThe jacket and trousers are made especially heavy, they are a bit like wearing clothes made out of lead.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the helmet, visor and headphones severely restrict the student's senses.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Eckardt most students are surprised how hard it is to move when they are wearing the suit.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd that is the whole point, for them to understand just how difficult normal tasks can be for elderly people.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to give the students a sense of what it is like to be old,\" Eckardt says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"That means that when we put the age suit on a student we hope that they will at least somewhat understand what the physical life of an older person is like. At least they will understand it better than when they just read or hear lectures about it\".\u003cbr/\u003eHorst Suker is an 85-years-old former toolmaker. A Berlin native he now lives with his daughter in the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he comes in to the clinic on a regular basis for check-ups.\u003cbr/\u003eToday he was invited to watch the age suit class and give his opinion on the project.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is necessary in the medical science.  In order to design the therapies they need to know how it feels to be an old person and what you can actually do,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the class the students are asked to move around freely but also do everyday tasks like reading a restaurant menu and trying to differentiate between a blue and a green shirt.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also try to do exercise, like using an exercise bike.\u003cbr/\u003eKatharina Wirth is a third year medicine student.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says she was surprised at how heavy and hard everything becomes when wearing the suit.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You notice how heavy it is for the back, you bend down a bit. And you notice in the knee and arm joints that you cant bend them properly. And you can't feel anything (with the hands). And also getting out of bed is very difficult,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eChristin Liedtke is also a medicine student.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says it would be very difficult to wear the suit for longer than required in the class.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For a little while it is acceptable, you can kind of compensate for the weight of the suit. But I would not want to wear it for longer than an hour.\" \u003cbr/\u003eFrederik Brinkmann says that wearing the suit really makes him realise why things take a lot longer for elderly people.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Yes I think you really notice how long everything takes all of a sudden. It really helps to understand,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the future the people at the Evangelisches Geriatriezentrum hope to use the suit to train nurses and therapists in addition to future doctors.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are hoping that they can continue to transform you students into seniors, even for just a few minutes, to improve the elderly care of the
