Ethiopian nationals will not be allowed to leave the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eTwo to 300 Ethiopian migrant workers gathered outside the Ethiopian embassy in  Asmara, Eritrea on Thursday hoping to obtain identity cards needed to return to  Ethiopia.  \u003cbr/\u003eEthiopian nationals will not be allowed to leave the country or enter Ethiopia without  identity cards.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith an all-out war a possibility, and no guarantee of gaining entry back to Ethiopia,  many migrants fear they may be stranded behind enemy lines.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the Ethiopians on the other side, this gateway could be their only route home.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ethiopian Embassy in the Eritrean capital Asmara has been swamped by  frightened nationals desperate to leave.\u003cbr/\u003eQueues formed outside on Thursday as they waited to get into the compound.\u003cbr/\u003eBut progress was slow with only one official left working in the Ethiopian Embassy.\u003cbr/\u003eOther embassy staff have left for Ethiopia over the past few days as hostilities between  the countries escalates from a border dispute towards a state of war.\u003cbr/\u003eEach applicant has to be processed according to tribal origin, some having both  Eritrean and Ethiopian ancestry, which further complicates the procedure. \u003cbr/\u003eThere is no guarantee that every applicant will receive a card.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe one remaining embassy official planned to stay on for the time being.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent days the conflict between the two countries has spread onto three fronts.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, an Ethiopian spokesperson announced Eritrean forces had attacked  troops along the border in the vicinity of the Eritrean port of Assab.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Assab region is where landlocked Ethiopia's border comes closest to the Red Sea,  about 75 kilometres (45 miles) away. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is the first time fighting has flared in this area.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil the recent border dispute the countries had enjoyed friendly relations - the  Ethiopian work force in Eritrea being an example.\u003cbr/\u003eMost Ethiopians still in Eritrea are not experiencing serious abuse, and only limited  hostility from local people.  \u003cbr/\u003eUPSOUND: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We do have some problems here as Ethiopians in Eritrea.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Vox pop, Ethiopian migrant\u003cbr/\u003eMuch will depend on attempts by the international community to broker a solution.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Organisation of African Unity said a delegation of African leaders would visit  Ethiopia and Eritrea on a peace mission.\u003cbr/\u003eEritrea, meanwhile, proposed that Egypt join the United States and Rwanda in attempts  at mediation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States and Rwanda have put forth a four-point proposal to stop the fighting  and start talks.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of these people will have lived with war nearly all their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eEritrean rebels fought Ethiopia for 30 years to gain independence finally in 1993.\u003cbr/\u003e6Asmara, Eritrea  - June 10, 1998 - TOKO \u003cbr/\u003e1.
