The yacht-building industry is creating jobs and apprentice training in the country and is...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eWhile a geographically remote country, New Zealand is still a major player in the design and construction of some of the world's super yachts.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe yacht-building industry is creating jobs and apprentice training in the country and is now worth millions of dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eAuckland - a city of sails and yachting in vessels of all shapes and sizes.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's also where award-winning super yachts are being designed and built, creating jobs and bringing a boost to the country's economy. \u003cbr/\u003eMore a mega yacht than a super yacht, this vessel \"A\", is 119 metres long (390 feet) and is owned by a Russian billionaire.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis one wasn't built in New Zealand, but it currently sits in Auckland's arena attracting a great deal of attention and soon it will not be alone.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to marine organisation NZ Marine, New Zealand is fast becoming a popular destination on the world's super yacht cruising map with more and more vessels making the journey to see the sights and sail in its waters.\u003cbr/\u003eThis one vessel is currently under construction at the ship yards of yacht-makers Alloy Yachts International in Auckland.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Mondango3,\" as it's known, is an impressive 56 metre (183 feet) Ketch (a sailing craft with two masts) which is being built here for overseas clients.\u003cbr/\u003eManaging Director of Alloy Yachts International, Tony Hambrook, says the super yacht construction industry has existed for decades in New Zealand, but gained traction internationally in the nineties.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the strong New Zealand dollar is currently putting some people off, others are visiting from around the world to have their own boat built in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eHambrook says customers do this for a number of reasons: \"I think they like the quality we produce, they like the New Zealand attitude, the can-do attitude. We are very accomplished at accommodating requests for innovation, particular features. We have no problems doing that at all within the bounds of reason.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHambrook adds that as a yacht-building employer, they are boosting the economy and bringing work into the area.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are one of the few builders who have all trades in-house, in other words the tradesmen are on our payroll. And we do everything from electrical design, structural design, hydraulics, all domestic systems, interior design and then the fabrication and building of all,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Hambrook, New Zealand's recent participation in the America's Cup sailing challenges has helped raise the country's profile internationally. \u003cbr/\u003eOracle - the boat sailed by Team USA and eventual winner of the 2013 Cup - was actually built in New Zealand.\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as Alloy Yachts, other major yacht builders in New Zealand include Fitzroy Yachts, McMullen\u0026amp;amp;Wing and Yachting Developments.\u003cbr/\u003eAlloy have been building boats since 1985, having built and launched 44 boats and won numerous awards for their vessels.\u003cbr/\u003eThe construction of this super yacht, Mondango3, is taking over two years and by completion will have taken some half a million man hours.\u003cbr/\u003eThe marine construction industry, including Alloy Yachts, uses experienced trades people, but also have a strong culture of apprenticeships and on-the-job training.\u003cbr/\u003eChris Brown, Operations Manager at Alloy Yachts International, says they employ a variety of specialists.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The trades on the boat at the moment are everything from designers still involved, engineers, plumbers, electricians, entertainment people setting up the sound system and audio visual equipment inside,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Obviously the woodworkers are still finishing the teak decks, the painters still finishing the painting. Every trade we have in the country is still working on the boat and they will until it goes out of the door.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBrown says this boat is made from a vast array of materials.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So from the exterior, we've got the entire hull and superstructure is made of 50/83 marine grade aluminium, the deck is covered with Burmese teak, we've got glass from Germany and then stainless steel which we've fabricated in-house, that's the bulk of it. The paint is a product also from Germany. And then moving inside we have everything from stainless steel to walnut to palm wood, leathers, various leathers from all over the world,\" he explains. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery aspect of a super yacht is designed to be \"super.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFrom the size - which means it's usually over 33 metres (108 feet) long - to the luxurious detailing across exteriors and interiors of the vessel.\u003cbr/\u003eOn this yacht, the interior is finished in leathers and wood with bespoke artwork and embellishments decorating the interior.\u003cbr/\u003eLike the rest of the boat, the interior is still under construction, but it's now close to completion.\u003cbr/\u003eSoon this yacht will be launched and put through its paces in numerous sea trials in the waters around Auckland.\u003cbr/\u003ePeter Busfield, Executive Director of marine organisation NZ Marine, says the yacht-building industry is worth a huge amount of money to the country.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The super yacht industry of new builds and refits is close on half a billion (NZ) dollars and most of this is in export. So it supplies a workforce of two or three thousand people a permanent job,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eBusfield also has a few ideas why people make the trip down to New Zealand to get their luxury boats made.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think it's because of the craftsmanship that is in New Zealand, to innovate and to build the best boats.
