Kidney patients talking\u003cbr/\u003eA Dutch television show in which a terminally ill woman would supposedly donate her kidney to one of three contestants was revealed as a hoax on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the last moment, presenter Patrick Lodiers of the \"Big Donor Show\" said the woman known as \"Lisa\" was an actress, not actually dying of a brain tumour as claimed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe entire exercise was intended to pressure the government into reforming its organ donation laws and raise public awareness of the need for organs, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe three prospective recipients were real patients in need of transplants and had been in on the hoax, the show said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe programme concept had led to widespread criticism for being tasteless and unethical.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Lodiers said that it was \"reality that was shocking\" because around 200 people die annually in the Netherlands while waiting for a kidney, and the average waiting time is more than four years.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring a news conference following the revelation one of the contestants of the show said \"something very drastic was needed and this had to happen to wake up everybody.  It's just the way it is,\" said Esther-Claire who was in on the hoax but is a real kidney patient.\u003cbr/\u003eThe thought that is behind it is much more important and I think the same people association had called on members not to participate in the programme, and questioned its authenticity.\u003cbr/\u003eBut following the revelation some kidney patient and member of Netherlands' Kidney Patients Organisation spoke out in favour of the programme.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I thought it was brilliant, really,\" said Caroline, a kidney patient.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Wonderful, we need this publicity and it's a really good ending,\" said Will, who's boardmember of the Kidney Patients Organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe show was produced by Endemol, which created \"Big Brother\" in 1999, introducing the concept of reality TV.\u003cbr/\u003eViewers were to be called on to vote for their favourite candidate by SMS text message during the show.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier in the week, the Dutch government declined suggestions from lawmakers to ban the program, saying that would amount to censorship.\u003cbr/\u003eBNN had said Lisa had less than six months to live, and would carry out the donation within a month of choosing a winner.\u003cbr/\u003eBut doctors usually refuse to accept organ donations from terminally ill patients because the operation could hasten their death.\u003cbr/\u003eAdditionally, under Dutch rules, donors must be friends, or preferably family, of the organ recipient. \u003cbr/\u003eMeeting on a television program wouldn't qualify.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a spokeswoman for the Dutch doctor's association said that it was conceivable the transplant could have been carried out abroad. \u003cbr/\u003eBNN spokeswoman Marieke Saly said earlier on Friday that all arrangements for the program were completed, but she declined to comment on where and when the donation would be carried out.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the show, 25 kidney patients were vetted by \"Lisa,\" and most were quickly dismissed for being too old, too young, smokers, ex-smokers or unemployed.\u003cbr/\u003eContestants gave moving pleas for why they should receive the organ.  \"Lisa\" spoke emotionally of her desire to give the gift of life to someone else, even as she herself was dying.\u003cbr/\u003eThe contestants, identified as Esther Claire, 36,
