The study involved patients visualising the cancer. Even drawing it on a piece of paper and then seeing how their own body was attacking it. Or because some tumours follow and evolve in unusual ways that may benefit the patient. Those things happen from time to time. For the rest I have no explanation. Pan of conference exhibition\u003cbr/\u003eEurope's largest ever conference on cancer is underway in the Spanish city of Barcelona. \u003cbr/\u003eThe conference, called ECCO14 (European Cancer Conference), (September 23-28), is a gathering of the world's leading specialists currently involved in researching new ways to tackle the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eIn research presented at the conference experts said the treatment cancer patients receive may one day depend on their genes, which may help doctors predict not only which patients will probably develop cancer, but even those who will relapse, or be suitable for specific treatments.\u003cbr/\u003eBut even if researchers can identify the genetic components responsible, many factors remain beyond doctors' control.\u003cbr/\u003eOne survivor says he beat the disease with the help of Buddhist meditation. \u003cbr/\u003eLaurent Cohen was diagnosed with an aggressive type of lymphatic cancer in 1991, and after unsuccessful surgery he was told that he had a few months to live.  \u003cbr/\u003eA practising Buddhist, Cohen refused to accept that verdict and he pursued his own remedy of prayer and mediatation. \u003cbr/\u003eEventually after six years of alternative therapies, the cancer remained in his system and he decided to try a more conventional medical treatment, chemotherapy. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was given a sixty-five percent chance of surviving after the treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eA few months after starting the chemotherapy, tests showed that the cancer has disappeared from his body.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the combination of medical treatment and meditation helped him to become cancer free. \u003cbr/\u003eCohen says that his Buddhist faith and positive outlook helped him to deal with the gruelling treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eCohen, a French national living in Barcelona, has now been cancer free for seven years. \u003cbr/\u003eOncologists attending the ECCO14 (European Cancer Conference), (September 23-28) were divided in their opinion of mind over matter. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Gordon McVie is the Europe Editor of the US journal of the National Cancer Institute. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says a positive outlook can help a patient's recovery from cancer.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor McVie quotes a study by psychologists at Hull University in the UK, which found that there are more active white blood cells which attack the cancer cells in subjects who believed they could recover from the cancer. \u003cbr/\u003eFunded by UK Cancer Research, the study found that learning special relaxation methods and how to visualise white blood cells destroying cancer cells can produce measurable changes in the immune system of patients with cancer. \u003cbr/\u003eThis finding was reported on Saturday 15 April 2000, by Professor Leslie Walker of the University of Hull at The British Psychological Society's Division of Clinical Psychology Conference.  \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor John Smyth is the president of Federation of European Cancer Societies (FECS). \u003cbr/\u003eHe says this is the largest European cancer congress, bringing together lab based scientists and doctors and nurses involved in patients' care. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Smyth says that the patients' state of mind can affect the \"whole body physiology. So there's absolutely no reason why that shouldn't influence the effect on that their  cancer.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHowever not everyone agrees. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Michelle Jouit, a clinical oncologist
