(PDVSA)  headquarters on Thursday evening to reject \"the interference of the transnational Exxon Mobil.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eHolding signs that showed their objection to the US oil company and support of Venezuela's state oil company, the protestors included PDVSA employees, as well as students and other civilians.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Workers in all of Venezuela are here to reject the interference of the American government, the interference of the British government, the interference of the transnational Exxon Mobil that wants to make Venezuela's sovereignty vulnerable,\" PDVSA employee Carlos Sierra told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier in the day Venezuelan Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez addressed members of congress on the legal battle with Exxon, saying the US company was a \"great enemy\" which was staging an economic war against his country.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are trying to hold our national oil company hostage of judicial terrorism in order to create a state of fear and anxiety in our country,\" Ramirez told congress.\u003cbr/\u003e\"President Chavez has already denounced this, which is part of the economic war against our revolution, against our state,\" he added\u003cbr/\u003eRamirez, who is also the president of state oil company  Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) also emphasised previous administrations opening the doors far too wide for oil multinationals.\u003cbr/\u003e Contracts signed years ago, he said, gave foreign companies the ability to arbitrate disputes overseas. \u003cbr/\u003eThis turned PDVSA into what the minister described as a \"hostage\" of international-company interests. \u003cbr/\u003ePrevious administrations, Ramirez said, \"demolished\" the country's oil tax regulations and \"handed over\" control of the oil industry to foreign companies. \u003cbr/\u003eExxon Mobil Corp. is demanding more than 10 times the compensation it may deserve from Venezuela for nationalising one of its oil ventures, Ramirez said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe oil Minister added the amount that Exxon Mobil could lose as a result of Venezuela's nationalisation last year wouldn't even reach 10 percent of the 12 billion (b) US dollars billion in assets the company has sought to freeze in court.\u003cbr/\u003eExxon Mobil is seeking to freeze assets belonging to Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA, to guarantee a payoff in the event an international arbitration panel now considering the case rules in its favour. A British court injunction last month ordered up to 12 billion (b) US dollars of PDVSA's assets temporarily frozen.\u003cbr/\u003eVenezuelan President Hugo Chavez this week threatened to cut off all oil shipments to the United States in response Exxon Mobil's legal challenges.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, PDVSA said it will stop selling oil to Exxon Mobil. But Ramirez on Wednesday said the state-run company would meet its existing contractual requirements, suggesting that some shipments will continue to the Irving, Texas-based company.\u003cbr/\u003eThe legal fight has not affected a refinery jointly owned by Exxon Mobil and PDVSA in the New Orleans suburb of Chalmette, Exxon Mobil said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a legal spat that has escalated into a political confrontation, Venezuela has now decided to suspend all commercial dealings with Exxon. \u003cbr/\u003eA breakdown of business relations would do away with Venezuela's spot market sales to the US company. \u003cbr/\u003eRamirez said PDVSA usually sold 600-thousand barrels a month to Exxon and those barrels had already been allocated to other buyers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Venezuelan oil minister also said PDVSA \"is also pondering\" what actions to take regarding oil supply to a Chalmette, La., refinery jointly owned by both companies. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far, PDVSA continues to supply that refinery with the necessary crude, Ramirez added, even though a supply contract expired months ago. \u003cbr/\u003ePDVSA's legal team has already handed in affidavits to contest the 12 billion (b) US dollar asset freeze ordered by a London court.
