May-ling, who died on Thursday at her home in New York, aged 105. \u003cbr/\u003ePassersby in the bustling Causeway Bay district stopped to look at the display and sign the condolence book.\u003cbr/\u003eTrade Union chairman Lee Kwok-keung said his group wanted to spread awareness in Hong Kong of Chiang's achievements.\u003cbr/\u003eMadame Chiang spent most of her time in semi-seclusion in New York since the 1975 death of her husband, President Chiang Kai-shek.\u003cbr/\u003eHer supporters considered Madame Chiang to be a patriot who used her fluent English to drum up foreign support\u003cbr/\u003efor her husband's Nationalist government when it ruled China and battled the Japanese during World War II.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the war, the Nationalists were defeated by the Communists and retreated to Taiwan in 1949. \u003cbr/\u003eHer admirers say Madame Chiang and her husband helped keep the Communists from swallowing up the island.\u003cbr/\u003eBut her detractors dismissed her as the spokeswoman for a brutal dictator and a corrupt, repressive government that resisted democratic reforms in Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eSince its return to China in 1997, Hong Kong's
