Nothing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut before too long, something did come between women and buying jeans -- fashion.\u003cbr/\u003eAs quickly as designer jeans had become all the rage, they were forgotten again.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, over a decade later, designers, retailers and shoppers say that designer jeans are  back.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was this man, French designer Francois Girbaud, who is credited with inventing  designer jeans back in the sixties.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says today's so-called designer jeans aren't designer jeans at all. They're just  marketing machines for the big fashion companies.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"For me, I don't really understand what designer jean means. Because these people  don't design any jean. They don't design, they just put a name. Its a Levi's five-pocket  jean with a name.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Francois Girbaud, fashion designer\u003cbr/\u003eCalvin Klein leads in sales of designer jeans at the moment. \u003cbr/\u003eBut that name has competition, from Donna Karan's D-K-N-Y jeans, and Tommy  Hilfiger's new women's collection.\u003cbr/\u003eRalph Lauren also jumped into the top of the market this year with his Polo jeans.\u003cbr/\u003eRetailers across the U-S say the designer jeans business has been explosive over the  last couple of years.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"It really has become a very very trendy  business. DKNY has been very strong, and  now Polo and Tommy Hilfiger have come out with their own denim lines which are really  two of the strongest lines going. So its become more and more a real fashion business,  as I said, its really becoming the fashion trend to get into jeans.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nick Vega, General Manager of Bloomingdales, Bethesda,  Maryland, USA\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the most popular jean in every collection is the basic, plain pair of jeans -- like  those sold by Levi Strauss or Wrangler for about 30 dollars (U-S).\u003cbr/\u003eBut stick a designer label like D-K-N-Y on that basic pair of jeans, and the price tag  looks more like this.   Price tag shows 125 dollars (U-S)\u003cbr/\u003eSo, who's buying these jeans?\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"She's all ages. She really is. There are some designers that try to focus on the junior  crowd, but the majority of designers are really focusing on the 30- to 40-something  crowd. Really all ages, I mean there's all sorts of women. My mother wears jeans. Its  become a fashion must for all ages.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nick Vega, General Manager, Bloomingdales, Bethesda\u003cbr/\u003eAnd fashion magazines are profiting from the designer jeans frenzy, as well.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Elle\" magazine ran 100 pages of adverts for designer jeans in 1996, compared to 60  pages the previous year. And more adverts are planned for 1997.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many women claim there IS a difference in the brands they buy -- and they're loyal  to their favourites.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Calvin Klein jeans.
