Various show footage 'Walking With Dinosaurs'
They're not just big, they're super-sized and now they're walking the earth again in London.
Walking with Dinosaurs: The Live Experience is said to be the biggest animatronic puppet show ever created.
And it's certainly expensive - costing some ten million pounds ( approx. 14 million USD).
It's a breath taking spectacle that joins the prehistoric with cutting edge 21st century technology.
15 life-sized dinosaurs, including the Tyrannosaurus Rex, are part of the live theatrical show which aims to entertain and educate.
Based on the BBC's hit television series 'Walking With Dinosaurs', the show originated in Sydney where it opened in January 2007.
The 'edutainment' spectacular tells the story of our prehistoric ancestors, from birth to extinction.
It was an instant success and by July of the same year the show started it's American tour.
It has since been seen by more than two million people, generating some $90 million in ticket sales.
Associate Director, Cameron Wenn says the show has created a new genre of entertainment. "To even attempt something like this seemed ludicrous at the time," he says. "And we were all stood around before the dinosaurs were built thinking 'how is this going to work?' Thankfully we've made it work and not through any short degree of effort from a lot of people and a lot of combinations of technologies."
Specialist engineers, animatronics experts, mechanics and artists, many of whom worked on films such as The Matrix, and the Star Wars prequels, took six years to perfect the 3D monsters.
Creature designer, Sonny Tilders says the main challenge creating the 'puppets' is weight.
While developing the models it was vital to find a material for the skin that was both light weight and durable. Tilders and his team have achieved this, but will not reveal what the material is.
"It all starts with the skin, because the skin is such a large surface area. So the lighter we can make the skin the lighter the structures are underneath, the lighter the hydraulic cylinders can be, the less batteries we need to have. If we didn't get the skin right we may have had to trail a load of batteries behind this thing, to keep this thing moving around the stage," he says.
To make the skin appear as realistic as possible, Tilders and his team fit muscle bags under the skin of each model.
The bags are made from stretch mesh fabric and filled with polystyrene balls which roll and ripple as the creature moves.
It takes a touring crew of 65 to stage each performance.
Today at London's O2 Arena the T Rex and her baby are being controlled by a combination of techniques.
Good old fashioned human legs carry baby T Rex around.
But it takes three specialist puppeteers and an army of technicians to deal with Mum.
The first puppeteer sits in the chassis of the creature, barely visible behind a veil. His job is to move the model large distances.
Further large movements of the body are achieved using voodoo rigs. These are miniature versions of the dinosaurs with the same range of movement as their counter-parts.
The puppeteers operate the rigs that then transmit a radio signal to the hydraulic cylinders in the creatures.
The dinosaurs which are now set to appear in the European tour have evolved since their first appearance in Australia according to Tilders. T Rex is now smoother than ever before.
"Hyrdaulics are generally designed to move really big objects very powerfully and very precisely," he says. "We don't need that for our dinosaurs. We need fluid, graceful movement.
