Close up Alistir Tate examining gold nugget
A group of investors is hoping to strike it rich in the Highlands to create the UK''s only commercial goldmine.
In the depth of the global economic slowdown house prices have fallen, shares plummeted and businesses collapsed, but one commodity is still shining brighter than ever before - gold.
Gold - it''s the purest metal known to man and it''s adorned the homes and costumes of the wealthy since the beginning of recorded history.
Usually a safe bet, investors in-the-know store it as a hedge against inflation, weak currencies and economic disruption.
In 2009, the price of gold rose by 24 percent.
And so began the modern day gold rush. Everybody wanted a piece - privately and commercially, jewellers and investors - and they still do.
The metal currently stands at more than $1,100 USD per ounce (as at 23rd March 2010).
The Coronish gold mine is nestled within the Trossachs National Park in Loch Lomond.
The locals have known for decades that the underbelly of these central highland mountains is veined with gold.
But until now extraction has been limited to casual panning.
It''s kept the supply of Scottish gold low and the price high. But one man hopes to change all that.
Chris Sangster, the C.E.O. of Scotgold Resources Ltd bought the mine from Switzerland based Oak Consortium in 2007.
Exploratory work revealed gold deposits in 1983, but they were left unexploited by Oak Consortium due to a drop in the price of gold at the time.
Now Sangster and his team are waiting on planning permission to turn Coronish into the U.K''s only commercial goldmine.
Exploration work is already well under way and Sangster says he''s certain he''s onto a winner.
"Scotland has been very much under-explored in a geological sense for a number of minerals. The British Geological Survey has done a lot of work here in the last thirty or forty years and they certainly believe there''s potential for not only gold and silver deposits, but also base metal deposits."
Where there''s gold, there''s fool''s gold.
And making sure that the Scotgold team are not taken for fools is consultant geologist Dave Catterall.
"Looking at the type of vein for instance on this one I can see that we''ve got quartz, we''ve got fragments of the wall rock, we''ve got mineralisation of sulphide, galina - all of those things tell me that this is an interesting mineralised vein," he says.
According to Sangster there are more than 21,000 ounces of gold in the mine and 80,000 ounces of silver.
Catterall says the gold in the deposits here is partly from a magmatic source and partly from a mixing of hydrothermal fluids.
He says the rocks on the side of the wall are more than 600 million years old. The vein with the mineralisation is approximately 410 million years old.
The team expect to extract the gold over a 7 year period and turn over more than 16 million pounds (24,067,807 USD)
Once the life of the working mine has come to an end Sangster says he hopes the local economy will continue to benefit.
"This site here could very easily be developed into some kind of tourist facility. Heritage mining sites in the U.K. and throughout the world have often been very, very popular with tourists," he says.
Scotgold Resources Ltd joined the Australian Stock Exchange in 2007.
Alongside planning permission which is expected in June this year, it''s also looking to raise funds from private and institutional investors for further exploration.
Sangster believes there is even more gold and silver to be found beyond the mine in an area covering 2,200 square kilometers across the Scottish Highlands.
One thing is for certain - The Coronish mine has made its land owner, John Burton, a very wealthy man.
But he says there are far more important things in life.
"I don''t know that we''re over the moon, it''s not everything. I think good health is more important than a bit of money, but a little bit extra comes in handy now and again."
In the nearby village of Tyndrum residents are welcoming the prospect of the goldmine.
Scotgold Resources Ltd has reassured the community that the environmental impact will be minimal.
The mine will output about 4kg of gold a week.
Unlike a quarry, the underground mine is visually non intrusive. Other infrastructure includes a processing facility housed in an acoustically clad building and tailings facilities - the area where crushed rock is stored.
Sangster insists this will be restored concurrently so that as the work continues it blends in with the landscape.
John Riley is chairman of the Strathfillan Community Council.
He claims nobody from the village of Tyndrum objects to the goldmine and he hopes that planning permission will be granted to Scotgold Resources Ltd.
Employment in the area is cyclical and largely controlled by the tourist industry. That means there''s not much work in the winter.
Riley believes the goldmine will create all year round employment and put at least 1.5 million pounds into the local economy (2,255,668 USD).
He also says he''s confident Scotgold Resources Ltd will keep their promise about protecting the environment.
"See now we don''t live in a museum.
According to Tait , Scottish gold currently costs three to four times its face value because of its rarity.
But he says an increase in supply can only be good for the industry.
"There might not be the same market for the Fraternity of Gold Panners who are out there producing very small quantities, but if Scottish gold was available from a mine it would have a premium value and it would create a much greater knowledge of an interest in jewellery made from Scottish gold."
Gold prices have stalled for the first time this year after the budget crisis in Greece damaged confidence in Europe and pushed up the value of the dollar.
But analysts believe that investment in the precious metal will increase later this year
