So everyone's curious as to what's inside a mummy, so it was a standard practice to actually unwrap. We have several mummies in our collection that are unwrapped, but it's rare that there's mummies that are not unwrapped so that's why Demetrios is important."
7. Even though the mummy portrait shows a man who's much younger than 89, he's at the end of middle age, let's say. She considers modern scientific technology the best way to gather information on these first century humans.
Conservationists at the museum started scanning in late July. Curator of Egyptian Art at the Brooklyn Museum, Edward Bleiberg says their mummy, Demetrios, is unique because people know exactly where he came from.
Bleiberg adds that C-T scanning Demetrios allowed curators to see how old he was when he died by the condition of his bones.
The new techniques have allowed researchers to uncover vital information about the paint used on Demetrios' shroud. It is believed it came from Spain, which reveals evidence of how well connected Egypt was to other parts of the world.
Researchers are also scanning animal mummies for the first time. For the ancient Eyptians, animals symbolised different deities. They would place them in tombs as offerings for the Gods.
Bleiberg says that being able to glimpse inside a mummy without having to unwrap it makes him curious to see more, but preservation is paramount.
Demetrios and other mummies will form part of the three year long "To Live Forever" exhibition that will travel to multiple destinations across the US next summer.
Clients are reminded:
(i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be
