Police car patrolling border\u003cbr/\u003eSome residents of Columbus in New Mexico said on Tuesday the border town was now struggling. \u003cbr/\u003eFor years, Columbus had a roaring underground economy, but an economy fuelled by one thing - smuggling people from Mexico across the border into the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a recent crackdown forced many of the smugglers to move out of town, and further down the border.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The fact there is more law enforcement here makes it difficult to carry on business as usual,\" said Roberto Gutierrez, a local Columbus store owner. \u003cbr/\u003ePolice officials said the crackdown had been difficult on the town's underfunded, understaffed police department.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's going to hurt agencies.
