stars of \"Lulu On the Bridge\" - arrived at the 51st annual gala event, along with the first-time director of the film, American author Paul Auster.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd in a publicity stunt to hype another movie, two small lion cubs spent their afternoon on the sandy beaches of southern France to the delight of the paparazzi waiting for the arrivals of Hollywood biggest names.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Cannes film festival is spending a quiet second day, with more people preferring to lie on the beach than sticking around the Croisette, Cannes' main boulevard. \u003cbr/\u003eFew big Hollywood stars are expected until the weekend, when the Blues Brothers 2000 group will organise a special concert with Aretha Franklin, B-B King and James Brown on Saturday night.\u003cbr/\u003eMegastars that attract hordes of paparazzi and fans - like Sharon Stone and Bruce Willis - will not arrive in Cannes until next week.\u003cbr/\u003eBut one of the biggest international names on the Croisette on Thursday was probably former Secretary General of the United Nations, Javier Perez de Cuellar.\u003cbr/\u003eHe followed the appearance of the current U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan, who was in town on Wednesday to attend a gala marking the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.\u003cbr/\u003eThe former U-N chief said he was pleased that the issue of human rights has been highlighted with the international attention that the annual film festival always attracts.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (French) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I find it's a very significant chance that human rights have been linked here to the film festival.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Javier Perez de Cuellar, former Secretary General of the United Nations\u003cbr/\u003eTwo more exotic visitors to the sunny sands of Cannes were a few baby lions shown off by actors Richard Harris and John Michie.\u003cbr/\u003eThe actors are starring in a small film showing at Cannes called 'To Walk With Lions' and used their furry friends for a picture-perfect publicity stunt.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the paparazzi were not disappointed with some big name arrivals at the start of the festival.\u003cbr/\u003eStrolling down the red carpet came actors Willem Dafoe and Mira Sorvino, who star in the film 'Lulu On The Bridge' being screened at the festival on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe film, the directoral debut for American author Paul Auster, is showing outside the main competition in the 'un certain regard section' of the festival.\u003cbr/\u003eThe well-known American author, who was himself one of the festival's judges last year, denied his place as one of Cannes' 'movie star' attendees. \u003cbr/\u003eHe insisted humbly that he remains 'a writer doing movies.' \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:  (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm a writer who's made a film -
