Various of students outside playing football\u003cbr/\u003eIn Kenya, a group of young technology experts has invented an educational app that could dramatically enhance the way school children learn. \u003cbr/\u003eCalled e-limu, which is a swahili word for education, the app aims to engage pupils as a teaching aide with videos, diagrams and quizzes. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's currently being piloted in one of the poorest areas of Nairobi.\u003cbr/\u003eOne group of software developers is bringing high tech learning to one of Kenya's poorest communities. \u003cbr/\u003eThey've created an app that captures students' attention and encourages them to learn. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Kenya, almost half of school students drop out at the age of 14, with a very basic education. But Nivi Mukherjee, the founder behind this pilot project, says that if learning is made more interactive and engaging,  then children will stay in school longer.?\u003cbr/\u003eThe developers hope to bring about a revolution in Kenya's school curriculum.\u003cbr/\u003eThe app is called e-limu, which is a swahili word for education. It brings the classroom to life with videos, diagrams and quizzes for these young students. The app was specifically designed with the entire Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, K.C.P.E, curriculum included. \u003cbr/\u003e\"E-limu is an organisation we started that basically creates an application and we sell pre loaded devices with the entire K.C.P.E  (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) curriculum on it. But now instead of just boring text books we have added animation, games, songs, videos and quizzes to make the entire learning process really fun, interactive and engaging for children,\" says Mukherjee. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pilot project was launched in Kawangware - one of the poorest parts of Nairobi which is notorious for drugs, prostitution and crime. \u003cbr/\u003eMost of the students here are lucky to be in school. \u003cbr/\u003e13-year-old, Marceline Keyanda is preparing to sit for her final primary examinations. She says that the app is more exciting and is easier to understand than reading text books. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When the teachers come to class, they always come with a lot of text books, now instead of teachers coming with a lot of text books they just come with tablets, when you have a question, when the teacher is not around, you just click on the tablet and you get the question which you have asked and we see the real pictures which the teachers have taught us in that tablet,\" says Marceline Keyanda.\u003cbr/\u003e14-year-old Dennis Chaka loves science and says he dreams of being a doctor. He says the application is really helpful because all the knowledge gleaned in his primary school years are included on the tablet. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Science, because all the subjects that we have learnt from class four up to class eight are inside there,\" says Dennis Chaka.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are many reasons why Kenyan students drop out of school early. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country's education system has a shortage of 80,000 teachers at the moment and in turn students are crammed into tiny classrooms all begging for the attention of one teacher. \u003cbr/\u003eThe education system that has been in place for years has also indirectly contributed to early drop outs. \u003cbr/\u003eStudents lack individual attention, and because classes aren't interactive, children's attention spans are limited - something that e-limu is trying to change.?\u003cbr/\u003eThe pilot project is in its early stages and for one teacher in particular, the tablet's success is evident in the dramatic increase in students' performance and also a significant improvement in attendance records. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The tablets have made our pupils to get the courage and confidence to come to school. And that has enhanced the performance and the attendance, and the total marks of the pupils. In education as a whole they have made the pupils to score a lot of marks,\" says Philson Madegwa.\u003cbr/\u003eNivi Mukherjee says that the app has a bigger goal for society as a whole. It is not only to improve the school ciriculum and the desire to learn, but she would like to teach children about the environment, finance and social issues to make them better citizens.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The future is, we would like to see children in Kenya using this as a device as a way to disseminate equitable education, as a way to disseminate information beyond our curriculum but about environmental  conservation,  about social justice, about human rights, about personal financial literacy, we want to teach children to grow up to be participants of the twenty this scheme is to work it needs funding and backing.?\u003cbr/\u003eMukherjee is optimistic that this new app with revolutionise learning in Kenya and perhaps the rest of Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eClients
