CU of sign on Imperial Chinese Arch at night
The Chinese community across the world are preparing to celebrate the Year of the Ox on January 26 and Chinese residents of Manchester are no exception.
Chinese traditions and culture have been passed on from generation to generation of ex pats.
But in Manchester there is growing concern among Chinese Community leaders and teachers that Chinese children born to Chinese parents in the UK are reluctant to follow and respect traditional Chinese Culture.
A magnificent Chinese Arch (built in 1987) stands over Manchester's Chinatown
It is painted in traditional red and gold and adorned with dragons and phoenixes - the colours and symbols of luck and prosperity.
The Chinese first came to Manchester during Britain's industrial revolution of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
With the revival of the textile and cotton industry in the 1950's, new immigrants arrived to Manchester and started business most notably laundry shops - because most people did not have their own washing machines.
By the 1970's Chinese people began branching out into restaurants and takeaways and British culinary tastes become more adventurous.
The growth in restaurants in Manchester led to a corresponding growth in services developed to serve the Chinese Community.
The Herbal Centre and Acupuncture Centre are just two of these many services.
But at the heart of the Chinese community is their culture and there is a sense that it needs to be taught to the children born in the UK to Chinese parents so it is not forgotten.
Jenny Wong is the Director of the Manchester Chinese Centre founded only three years ago.
Jenny is a former a Chinese Sunday school teacher and spent much of her career in Hong Kong.
She thinks that that Chinese culture is encapsulate in food, language and character.
Over 300 children between the ages of 4 and 18 are taught by 24 volunteer teachers.
Adults can also attend classes in Mandarin, Cantonese and English language and culture.
The children, who are mostly born in the UK and go to British mainstream schools, are taught either Cantonese or Mandarin language and Chinese culture.
Jenny Wong says that if British born children are not taught the language and culture of the their parents and grandparents they will lose their heritage.
Susan Mau is a typical student at the centre. Born in England to Chinese parents, she was nine years old when she started her Chinese education.
Susan says she found mandarin difficult to learn at first but her perseverance paid off and now she's learning to type in the language.
Jenny Wong explains that the Chinese have a family culture where the father is the head of the household.
She goes on to say that when children go to school their teacher becomes a much more important role model.
The centre encourages the children to practice their language skills at home.
Adult Learning Classes are also held at the centre and a group of Chinese women are practicing a dance for the forthcoming Chinese New Year Festivals.
Preparations for the festivities are already underway on the streets hung with Chinese lanterns and decorative lights lighting the night scene.
During the celebrations thousand of visitors and performers come together for the biggest Dragon dancing parades in Europe which end under the lights of the Imperial Arch.
Manchester University estimate that there are over 30,000 people of Chinese descent in Manchester.
With the ever growing population and its desire to keep traditions alive, Manchester Chinatown has become the Chinese cultural capital of the
