Wide of makeshift village\u003cbr/\u003eAs the world rallied to the support of the embattled Palestinian government on Monday, with leaders pledging hundreds of millions of dollars in immediate financial support, the West Bank and Gaza continue to face very different challenges in pushing through important reconstruction projects. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fate of Gaza, which has been virtually cut off from the world since the Islamic militant Hamas seized control by force in June, is particularly problematic.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout three quarters of Gaza's 1.5 million (m) residents now live in poverty, with Israel and Egypt virtually closing their borders after the Hamas takeover, which has wiped out tens of thousands of jobs.\u003cbr/\u003eReconstruction projects have also come to a standstill as materials and funds have dried up.\u003cbr/\u003eIn contrast to Gaza, in the West Bank town of Ramallah, a major road is being constructed to connect the north and south. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is expected to be completed by the end of 2007 with the help of Malaysian, German and American funding.\u003cbr/\u003eHisham Shkokani, Deputy Assistant Minister for Technical Affairs and head of Engineering in PECDAR (Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstructions), told the Associated Press that funding issues make it difficult to complete projects in the Gaza Strip, while things in the West Bank are progressing. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We try to distribute the money that we receive from the donors. 650 million (m) US dollars in 2008 and Norway pledged 140 million (m) US dollars  a year for three years. \u003cbr/\u003eBritain, France and Germany announced a combined 1.08 billion (b) US dollars for three years.\u003cbr/\u003eBut economists say it's not enough for the donors to pledge aid and for the Palestinians to carry out reforms. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Palestinian economy will only recover, according to the World Bank, if Israel eases sweeping physical and\u003cbr/\u003eadministrative restrictions on movement in the West Bank and Gaza.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael has been reluctant to do so,
