Various exteriors of Mariinsky Theatre building\u003cbr/\u003eThe world famous Mariinsky Theatre in the Russian city of St Petersburg marks its 150 anniversary this year.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe lavish building inspired composers Verdi and Wagner, to name a few, and is still treasured by the people of the city.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 228th season of opera and ballet has just begun.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mariinsky Theatre, known as the Kirov Theatre during Soviet times, was built in the 19th century and first opened its doors as an equestrian circus in 1849. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was designed by the famous Italian architect Albert Cavos, son of the opera composer Catterino Cavos. Ten years later, when the wooden circus burnt down completely, Cavos rebuilt it as an opera and ballet house with the largest stage in the world. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was called the Mariinsky Theatre in honour of the Emperor Alexander's II wife Maria Alexandrovna. \u003cbr/\u003eThe theatre was opened on 2 October 1860 showing Michail Glinka's opera \"A Life for the Tsar\". \u003cbr/\u003eBlue and gold colours are the symbols of the Mariinsky Theatre, which has remained virtually unchanged  since its rebuilding by Albert Cavos.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mariinsky Theatre has played host to some of the world's best ballet dancers and opera singers.  Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky, Galina Ulanova, Rudolf Nureyev are just some of those who have performed at the Mariinsky.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring both the imperial and Soviet times, the theatre was also the home of numerous conductors and musicians.\u003cbr/\u003eModern stars of the theatre like prima ballerina Viktoria Tereshkina say the theatre has an sense of history, which she can feel on stage.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The stage has some kind of energy of the previous centuries. I hope we manage it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWorld premieres of many masterpieces of Russian opera classics have been staged here. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong them were Modest Musorgsky's \"Boris Godunov\",  Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's \"The Maid of Pskov\" and Pyotr Tchaikovsky's \"Queen of Spades\". \u003cbr/\u003eAt the end of the 20th century, after the fall of Soviet rule, a new era for the theatre began with the arrival of Valery Gergiev, the famous conductor, who became the principle conductor of the theatre in 1988.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at news conference Gergiev says the theatre has played host to some of the world's greatest classical music composers and continues to inspire.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Verdi and Wagner immediately came here (after the theatre opened). This is why I believe it (the re-opening of the theatre) could bring new opportunities to the Russian music, which might help existing composers.\" \u003cbr/\u003eGergiev reorganised the theatre's operations and established links with many of the world's great opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, New York's Metropolitan Opera, the Opera Bastille in Paris and many others.  The theatre company now regularly tours the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new Mariinsky Theatre season 2010/2011 opened with Mussorgsky's opera \"Khovanshchina,\" conducted by Gergiev. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ballet troupe then opened with Leonid Yakobson's 1956 production of \"Spartacus\",  which was revived in July 2010. \u003cbr/\u003eTheatre goer Svetlana Morozova says she loves the building.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We love this theatre, because it's a classic, it is a beautiful theatre. We love it for classical performances. And I, myself, prefer ballet.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnd German tourist Kizla Schwab agrees.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a wonderful building.
