massive loss overnight.\u003cbr/\u003eThe benchmark Nikkei 225 stock index dropped 257.83 points, or 3.11 percent, to 7,999.02 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange at the close of morning trade. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Royal Bank of Scotland took fresh help from the government on Monday and announced that its losses for last year could reach 28 (b) billion pounds sterling (41.3 billion US dollars) - the biggest ever for a British corporation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe largest full-year loss previously reported by a British corporation was 15 (b) billion pounds sterling (21.4 billion US dollars), by Vodafone in 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eTo coincide with the RBS reports, Britain announced a second rescue plan for the country's ailing banks on Monday, hoping to thaw frozen lending by offering to insure banks against large-scale losses on bad assets they already hold.\u003cbr/\u003eUK Prime Minister Gordon Brown confirmed that the government has increased its stake in RBS to almost 70 percent, but declined to say whether he believed the bank would eventually be fully nationalised.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition, the government gave the Bank of England the green light to, in effect, start printing money by buying 50 (b) billion pounds sterling (74 billion US dollars) of whatever bank assets it considers to be necessary.\u003cbr/\u003eThe problems in Britain's banking system also sent shockwaves through Europe; in Germany, Deutsche Bank AG, which last week reported a 4.8 (b)billion euro (6.4 billion US dollar) loss for the fourth quarter, sank 8 percent while Commerzbank AG was 4 percent
