Various of overweight people walking \u003cbr/\u003eA new anti-obesity drug may soon be available across Europe as a treatment for diabetes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe European Medicines Agency recommended ACOMPLIA for approval in April 2006. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the drug has yet to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.\u003cbr/\u003eObesity is a growing problem across much of the developed world, as calorie rich and time poor lifestyles take their toll on people's health. \u003cbr/\u003eNow a new pill promises to shed pounds and help diabetics control their condition. \u003cbr/\u003eThe drug is called Acomplia and it works by controlling appetite and targeting stomach fat. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pharmaceutical company responsible for the drug, Sanofi-aventis SA, claims that in a clinical trial patients lost an average of 14-and-a-half pounds in a year; waistlines shrank by two-and-a-half inches and levels of healthy H-D-L cholesterol rose by 22 per cent.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor John Betteridge, an expert on obesity says the Acomplia could be important in the treatment of diabetics. \u003cbr/\u003ePat Convey who is a diabetic admits to being overweight says that he would consider taking the drug to lose weight and help control his diabetes.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut not everyone is in favour of solving obesity, by popping a pill. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctor David Haslam, an anti-obesity campaigner says that a good diet and exercise are crucial to maintaining a healthy body mass. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the United States a survey for the Federal Centres for Disease Control and prevention indicates that 71 percent of North American men are overweight and 31 percent are obese. For women, it's 62 percent overweight and 33 percent obese\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the problem is not going to disappear.... \u003cbr/\u003eA recent report the International Journal of Paediatric Obesity indicated that the number of overweight children worldwide will increase significantly by the end of the decade. \u003cbr/\u003eThe European Medicines Agency recommended ACOMPLIA for approval in April 2006. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever the US Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve ACOMPLIA for use in the US. \u003cbr/\u003eThe European agency, whose recommendations are usually followed by European Union regulators within three months, recommended approval of the drug for use only for some overweight or obese patients who also suffer from related problems, like abnormal cholesterol levels or type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company is conducting further studies aimed at extending its use to other kinds of patient and conditions. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is also considering new trials to re-apply for the drug's approval as an anti-smoking treatment on both sides of the
