Designer Giorgio Armani co-hosted the gala.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are very few people like Sean Penn who actually puts his ass on the line but there's a lot of people who want to be and who admire him and want to help. Sometimes the best way to do it if they can't go personally is to write checks.  Or they come with us, but we've been really, really thrilled with the support that Hollywood's given us so far,\" said Haggis.\u003cbr/\u003ePenn, a Cannes veteran of numerous films including last year's Palme d'Or winner, \"The Tree of Life,\" posed for photographers ahead of a press conference, and appeared ill at ease with the celebrity-fawning that often comes along with the festival.\u003cbr/\u003eHe compared the importance of raising money for Haiti, which was devastated by an earthquake in 2010, to finding money for serious films.\u003cbr/\u003eGuests for the evening gala included Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Lyle Lovett, Sean \"P. To actually be in a country that was in our hemisphere, a couple of miles from the United States to see that level of poverty was shocking to me. And after the earthquake was even more devastating. It was really jarring to experience that. To realize that these people are living in an alternate reality from ours and to see that going on while we lived out lives. It really felt like a nation had been destroyed. Even on TV you got a sense that the buildings aren't as heavy as they were. There were whole areas that were just decimated where everything had collapsed and then I think you realized the full enormity of what had happened. Even the smell that was there. But it's like any nation that goes through turmoil you know it brings out the best in people and you know it brings out the best in the world around - a kind of combined humanity which is what tonight is all about.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe night wrapped with a star-studded auction that included the chance to spend time with Lady Gaga, grab lunch with Nemcova or a take a three-day trip to Haiti with Penn. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen tickets to the Golden Globes weren't garnering a large enough bid, Haggis tried to sweeten the deal by offering up a date with Butler.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Who's up for putting in some extra money just so I don't make a fool of myself up here?
