Zoom out of Tom and Roxanne hugging\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the largest kidney exchange ever recorded, a 13-way swap. \u003cbr/\u003eA team of doctors in Washington, DC performed a series of 26 operations to put healthy kidneys into 13 people who might not have found a match, otherwise.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the story of two of those patients.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore today, Roxanne Boyd Williams and Tom Otten were complete strangers. \u003cbr/\u003eBut they were strangers who shared a unique, and lifesaving, bond. \u003cbr/\u003eRoxanne is now living with one of Tom's kidneys.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm just grateful that you would do that for somebody, you know, that you didn't even know,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a perfect world, Tom's kidney would have gone to his wife Irene, who suffered kidney failure last November and was told she needed a transplant. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, neither Tom nor anyone in his large family was a match.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I come from a pretty big family, so we immediately had a list of 15-plus people willing to give us a kidney and they said, 'Oh, Jeez, 15 people, you'll get a match easy. You'll be healed in months,\" recalls Tom.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as it turned out, it wasn't that easy. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen relative after relative failed to match, tests showed Irene's body wouldn't tolerate a kidney from 95 percent of the population.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People are telling us 'well, if you have at least five donors, you'll get a match.' And then it's a 'no, no, no, no, and then all of the sudden, we're running out of people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTom and Irene live with their teenage daughter outside St. Louis. \u003cbr/\u003eHalfway across the country, in Washington, DC, 30-year-old mother of three, Roxanne, faced a similar crisis. \u003cbr/\u003eRoxanne was in dire need of a second kidney transplant. \u003cbr/\u003eFor her first, in 2005, Roxanne's sister gave up one of hers. \u003cbr/\u003eThis time, Roxanne's father was ready and willing to do the same. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly this time around, it wasn't a match that would work.\u003cbr/\u003e\"My father called me and said it wasn't going to work, and it felt like somebody had just pulled a chair from under me,\" said Roxanne. \u003cbr/\u003eSo, both couples turned to Georgetown University Hospital's Dr. Keith Melancon, who heads the kidney transplant unit. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In 95 percent of the transplant programmes around the country, if you come to them with a donor that you don't match with, they basically tell you that that donor will not work,\" Dr. Melancon says. \u003cbr/\u003e\"You need to try to find someone else. And you can go and hopefully find someone else if you're lucky, but once you're in that category, you have very limited options and unfortunately, the clock starts to tick.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Melancon had a solution, a kidney swap, where donors like Tom give up their kidneys to complete strangers in an effort to find the best match for their own loved one in return.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are trying to find our patients, our recipients, a better partner than they brought to the dance,\" he explains.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd a complicated dance it is. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Melancon initially matched 16 donors with 16 recipients they had never met. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter six days of marathon surgeries, one recipient was forced to pull out, causing a domino effect that threatened to unravel the whole exchange.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the end, the swap lost three pairs, but for the 13 remaining, it was a puzzle solved.\u003cbr/\u003eAs it turned out, Tom may not have been a good kidney match for his wife Irene, but he was that needle in the haystack for Roxanne Boyd Williams. \u003cbr/\u003eHis kidney went to her.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm grateful for the chance to, to be there for my children. A chance to be there for my children completely,\" Roxanne says, breaking down in tears.\u003cbr/\u003eRoxanne's father's kidney went to a 58-year-old mother of four with two grandchildren and a new one on the way.\u003cbr/\u003eAs for Irene, Dr. Melancon found her needle in the haystack, too.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's really almost a religious experience when we start doing this because it's miraculous, it really is,\" Dr. Melancon says.\u003cbr/\u003eFor all involved, miraculous seems to be the only way to describe it.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The way this whole thing has come together. And in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. How providential is that?\" says Tom.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Melancon's team is hoping swaps such as this one will improve the chances for those hard-to-match kidney patients in need.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrently in the United States, nearly 83,000 people are on the national waiting list for a kidney transplant. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 4000 of those patients die each
