The surrender of some of the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eKhmer/Natsound\u003cbr/\u003eEight senior Khmer Rouge commanders officially surrendered to the government in the capital Phnom Penh on Monday, after leaving the Cambodian jungles where they lay down their arms last week.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe surrender of some of the most senior rebel generals has dealt the final blow to the fractured guerrilla movement, whose genocidal rule during the years 1975-1979 caused the deaths of nearly 2 (m) million Cambodians. \u003cbr/\u003eBut defectors say that despite the surrender, the Khmer Rouge's top three leaders, wanted for crimes against humanity, remain at large in the jungles that line the border between Cambodia and Thailand. \u003cbr/\u003eThese Khmer Rouge commanders disappeared into the jungles of Cambodia to begin a guerrilla war against the regime that ousted them twenty years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eNow they are back in Phnom Penh as guests of the government, following their surrender to the very enemies they have spent decades trying to vanquish.\u003cbr/\u003eThis latest surrender appears to spell the end for the stricken Khmer Rouge movement,  after last year's wave of mass defections sent the last few remaining hard liners further into the jungle as government forces took over their stronghold of Anlong Veng. \u003cbr/\u003eFormer rebel chief of staff Khom Ngon told reporters that up to 20-thousand rebel civilians and soldiers will soon be integrated into mainstream Cambodian society.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the people living under the Khmer Rouge were forced into refugee camps in neighbouring Thailand when Anlong Veng fell to the government. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Khmer)  \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is now the end of the Khmer Rouge. There will be no fighting anymore. Cambodia now has peace.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION:  Khom Ngom, former Khmer Rouge chief of staff\u003cbr/\u003eStill at large, however, are Ta Mok - known as \"the Butcher\" - Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, the sinister trio of leaders who oversaw the field commanders and their guerrillas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Cambodian government and the United States have said they want the three captured and tried for genocide and crimes against humanity.\u003cbr/\u003eBut  Khom Ngon insisted he had severed contacts with the three in April after government troops captured Anlong Veng.\u003cbr/\u003eKhom Ngon also revealed he has been negotiating with the Cambodian military since May to establish terms for a surrender.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it was the formation of Hun Sen's new coalition government late last month and the international recognition it has received which convinced the guerrillas to give up their fight.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Khmer)\u003cbr/\u003e\" We decided to defect because the new government was elected freely and fairly.
