Most survive for hundreds of years, up to 1500 years in fact, and so are likely to have been passed down through generations of owners.\u003cbr/\u003eLiterally meaning 'potted plant', Bonsai is an art of growing miniature trees in containers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trees are made more valuable not only by their age, but the skill used to cultivate them.\u003cbr/\u003eAll the top experts, unsurprisingly, are Japanese, and domestic authors have turned out many books introducing the hobby to the public.\u003cbr/\u003eLike with all plants Bonsai trees need looking after, not to mention preening and shaping, and many people have reserved themselves from starting the hobby or pastime for these money and time consuming images of Bonsai art. \u003cbr/\u003eA small pot type Bonsai, around 20 centimetres in height, and costing no more than 3,000 yen ($25) are however popular among the young generation and women. Experts say this may be due to people finding it easier to tend to a plant rather than owning a pet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe art of cultivating the Bonsai is now estimated to be practised in more than 40 countries, with the Bonsai population in Japan reaching one million. However, some enthusiasts say that figure could be higher, with increasing interest from youngsters in recent years. \u003cbr/\u003eKunio Kobayashi, a four time winner of the Prime Minister Award for growing and tendering an artistic Bonsai, invested more than three hundred million yen to build a Bonsai museum, named \"Shunkaen\", with magnificent Japanese rooms to display his work.\u003cbr/\u003eKobayashi spent 30 years in search of the \"right\" tree, and the best way to present his work. When he found it, Kobayashi invested nearly one hundred million yen (nearly $900,000) in buying the plant. But he wanted to raise more public interest in art of Bonsai.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that you have to focus on the best parts of the tree and hide it's faults.\u003cbr/\u003eMulti-national students from around the globe come to the \"Shunkaen\" museum to learn his techniques. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce a year, Kobayashi visits his local Elementary School to teach the children more about gardening. He says young westerners view Bonsai as more of art form, which is why it is popular abroad.\u003cbr/\u003eBonsais are characterised by style and size, with special tools available for the maintenance of the trees. \u003cbr/\u003eFumiaki Kaneko, a retired 64 year-old, is a student of the Shunkaen Bonsai Class and attends every week with his wife. He enjoys tending the trees. \u003cbr/\u003eShigeo Fujita, who runs an online shopping site, says that the recent Bonsai boom is attributed to an increase in the amount of spare time people have.\u003cbr/\u003eHe adds that the mini potted versions make it a relatively easy hobby to start.\u003cbr/\u003eFujita also runs a Bonsai Caf� in central Tokyo, displaying the plants.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he sells a lot of pots by the internet, but he's happy that he can now see the satisfaction of customers who buy them.
