Several  volunteer organisations, like Save the Children, Oxfam and C-A-R-E, pulled their entire  foreign staff out.\u003cbr/\u003eThis decision comes just after agreement between the ousted government of  Burhanuddin Rabbani and various non-aligned militias  to fight the Taliban under a  united front. \u003cbr/\u003eIt took the Taliban's conquest of the capital and overthrow of the government two weeks  ago to bring former Defence Minister Ahmed Shah Massoud together with warlord  Rashid Dostum, who commands the only other military force capable of confronting the  Taliban.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday fighting raged along the Salang Road, north of Kabul with both sides  exchanging fire.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the clashes moved ever closer, to within 15 kilometres (10 miles) north of Kabul, as  anti-Taliban forces launched guerilla style attacks supported by local villagers.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Taliban reprisals have been swift. Houses suspected of harbouring sympathisers  are being torched. \u003cbr/\u003eEvidence of this can be seen in the village of Baghram which was destroyed by the  Taliban Thursday, an indication they are not to be crossed.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the buildings, if not burnt to the ground were left uninhabitable.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd bloodstains on the road are more evidence of harsh reprisals from the inflexible  militant army.\u003cbr/\u003eA teenager believed to be aiding Massoud's men was shot dead outside his home here.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch acts appeared to be doing little to quell growing unrest against Taliban rule as  more and more villagers are reportedly rising up in rebellion against the new regime.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd if that resistance spreads to the capital itself the Taliban may find themselves  leaving the city as swiftly as they arrived.\u003cbr/\u003eKabul, Salang Road, North of Kabul, October 11, 1996; Baghram, 10 October 1996\u003cbr/\u003eKabul - 11 October 1996:\u003cbr/\u003e1.
