SOUNDBITE Barbara Schiavulli, Italian journalist\u003cbr/\u003eGunmen seized an Italian woman journalist in central Baghdad in a hail of gunfire on Friday after she had been interviewing people who fled last year's US assault on the Sunni insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, officials and colleagues said.\u003cbr/\u003eGiuliana Sgrena, a journalist for the newspaper Il Manifesto, was seized by gunmen who blocked her car near the Baghdad University compound at the Jadriyah bridge, located across the Tigris river from the Green Zone, police said.\u003cbr/\u003eAn eyewitness said he saw the abduction, and that the insurgents had dragged the woman journalist from the car and had fired weapons.\u003cbr/\u003eBullet casings lay on the ground at the scene.\u003cbr/\u003eSgrena had gone to the neighbourhood to interview Iraqis displaced from Fallujah, and then went on to Friday prayer services at a nearby Sunni mosque, colleague Barbara Schiavulli, an Italian radio journalist, told The Associated Press.\u003cbr/\u003eSchiavulli said she received a call from Sgrena's cell phone when the kidnapping was apparently under way.\u003cbr/\u003eRepeated calls after to Sgrena's cell phone went unanswered, until a final call, when someone answered without speaking, then hung up, Schiavulli said. The missing woman's cell phone then went dead.\u003cbr/\u003eSgrena's colleagues later were able to reach the two journalists' shared Iraqi translator, who told Schiavulli, that Sgrena had been kidnapped.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the translator, the kidnappers were waiting for Sgrena in two cars when she came out of the mosque, Schiavulli said.\u003cbr/\u003eSgrena had been in Iraq since January 23 and had telephoned her newspaper about two hours earlier.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the paper's head office in Rome, editor Luciana Castellina said Giuliana's ability to talk to people made her a
