Midshot of Segolene Royal on stage \u003cbr/\u003eThe rumours were true: The famously dysfunctional couple at the head of France's main opposition Socialist Party have broken up. \u003cbr/\u003eSegolene Royal broke the news to the writers of \"Behind the Scenes of Defeat\" which hits bookstores in France on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eSegolene Royal had shown little delicacy in sweeping aside Francois Hollande, Socialist party boss and the father of her four children, to bid for the French presidency herself. She also kept him and the Socialists at arm's length for much of her failed campaign. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd on Sunday night, as results of parliamentary elections rolled in, they confirmed leaked information that their romantic relationship, intimately intertwined with their political one, was over. \u003cbr/\u003eRoyal spoke to the authors of the book about the break-up and the difficulties she faced in getting support during the campaign from the Socialist Party which was being run by her own companion, Francois Hollande. \u003cbr/\u003eThe publisher of \"Behind the Scenes of Defeat\", Jean Daniel Belfond said that it was Royal herself who, ''felt that it  was important to break the news, so that everyone knows about it and it's clear.'' \u003cbr/\u003e''Even for the children for everyone around them, they needed this separation to be known worldwide so that both of them could go ahead and be secure about their plight,'' Belfond added.\u003cbr/\u003eNeither of them spelled out the reasons for the breakup, but Royal suggested in one interview that Hollande was seeing someone else, referring to \"his love interest.\" \u003cbr/\u003eBelfond also suggested that Hollande might have been jealous of Royale and this could have contributed to their break-up.\u003cbr/\u003e''He has felt some jealousy about not being chosen when he has been for such a long time the head of the Socialist Party and now his mate is campaigning and chosen by the Socialists to run for office and obviously this must have caused some strife in the couple.,'' he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe separation opens a political can of worms for the Socialists as they plot out a new direction after Royal's May 6 presidential defeat. It all seems a fitting symbol of the party's current state of disarray. \u003cbr/\u003eHollande is expected to make way for a successor next year. The Socialists are bracing for a bruising leadership battle that could pit Royal against former finance minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn. \u003cbr/\u003eThe interest highlighted how media in France, following the lead of other countries with aggressive tabloids and gossip magazines, are increasingly delving into public figures' private lives, long an area that was seen as
