of the knots in Kashmir's five-decade territorial dispute.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a boycott of the elections by separatist groups has effectively eliminated any chance of the poll offering voters a broad choice.\u003cbr/\u003eKashmir's youngest political stalwart has entered a crucial election battle part of a generation of young people bringing fresh hope to politics in the militancy-ripped region current chief minister, having occupied the post at various times for a total of 12 years.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth the main currents in Kashmir's politics, pro-India and pro-secession, are now led by people in their 20s and 30s.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of Kashmir's few female politicians, 36-year-old Mehbooba Mufti, leads another pro-India group, the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party.\u003cbr/\u003eHer party has been demanding that federal rule be imposed in Jammu and Kashmir to boost turnout and credibility for the poll.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough some tiny separatist parties may have chosen to contest the election, the wider boycott virtually guarantees the continued dominance of the National Conference and the dynastic Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, widely seen as closer to New Delhi than to Kashmiris.\u003cbr/\u003eAn alliance of more than 20 separatist political and religious groups has reiterated their intention not to field candidates in legislative races, claiming past elections have been rigged.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an effort to change this view, a committee of private citizens including prominent journalists and human rights activists has formed to try to bring the two sides together and convince separatists groups to back the election.\u003cbr/\u003eResponding to these efforts, Abdul Ghani Bhat, head of the All Parties Hurriyat Council, an umbrella group for about two dozen anti-Indian parties, said the election for a new assembly in Jammu-Kashmir would do nothing to solve the dispute over the Himalayan region's future.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian government wants to secure the participation of separatist groups in the vote to deflate a decade-old Islamic separatist insurgency that has killed more than 60-thousand people in Indian-controlled
