mostly in their late 60s and early 70s - die of old age.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the de facto pardons they received from the government, international pressure is building for former Khmer leaders to be tried for causing the deaths of an estimated 1.7 (m) million people during their reign between 1975 and 1979.\u003cbr/\u003eLast week the Cambodian Parliament approved extending pretrial detention for suspects accused of genocide from six months, to three years.\u003cbr/\u003eSome fear this will allow Khmer Rouge leaders to escape justice through natural death.\u003cbr/\u003eA senior official in Sary's Democratic National United Movement claims the aging leaders are now too old to come to power again and therefore are no longer a threat to Cambodia.\u003cbr/\u003eBut critics insist this is yet another attempt to deter efforts to bring Sary and other surviving Khmer Rouge soldiers to trial.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly two senior Khmer Rouge leaders are currently in custody - captured guerrilla general Ta Mok who is 72-years-old and chief torturer Kaing Khek Iev who is 56.\u003cbr/\u003eKaing Khek Iev turned himself in after declaring he would testify against his old comrades.\u003cbr/\u003eSary refused to comment on their situation.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Khmer)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Peace still remain precarious and we're concerned about this.
