Back view of hearing\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking before a US Senate hearing on Wednesday, a former FBI interrogator of an al-Qaida leader said \"enhanced interrogation\" techniques used by the Bush administration were \"ineffective, slow and unreliable\" and caused the prisoner to stop talking.\u003cbr/\u003eAli Soufan, testifying behind a screen to hide his identity to the Senate Judiciary Committee, said his team obtained a treasure trove of information from Abu Zubaydah using a non-threatening approach that outwitted the detainee, even getting him to talk by using his childhood nickname.\u003cbr/\u003eSoufan said his team had to step aside when CIA contractors took over using simulated drowning, sleep deprivation and other harsh methods.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said those techniques caused the prisoner to \"shut down.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhen asked about the \"ticking time bomb\" scenario - an example often use by US lawmakers - Soufan countered that his personal experience showed the techniques didn't work even when there wasn't a lot of time to prevent an attack.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Waiting 180 hours as part of the sleep deprivation stage is time we cannot afford to wait in a ticking bomb scenario,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn response to a question about statements made by President George W. Bush that the harsh methods used against Abu Zubaydah had resulted in new information, Soufan said that some Bush administration claims of success were \"half truths.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSoufan's testimony occurred during the first hearing on extreme interrogation methods since the Obama administration last month released Bush administration legal opinions that justified the techniques.\u003cbr/\u003eFormer State Department counsel Philip Zelikow, who advised Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, in 2005 had written legal opinions opposing 'enhanced interrogation techniques'.\u003cbr/\u003eHis opinions were discounted by members of the Bush adminstration's Department of Justice and ordered destroyed.\u003cbr/\u003eZelikow said those techniques violated constitutional bans on cruel and unusual punishment and since then the government had been able to operate successfully without resorting to them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hearing quickly became partisan when the chairman, Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, opened the hearing by promising to unravel \"our country's descent into torture\" and vowing to expose \"a bodyguard of lies\" by the Bush administration.\u003cbr/\u003eIn response, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, suggested the hearing may be a \"political stunt,\" and that Democrats were trying to judge officials who were making decisions soon after the September 11 attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eSenator Graham said former Vice President Dick Cheney has suggested \"there was good information\" obtained from the extreme methods.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I would like the committee to get that information.
