Various shots of bull being killed and taken out of the arena\u003cbr/\u003eCatalonians are preparing to vote on whether to ban bullfighting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crucial vote takes place on Wednesday, July 28, which could end the centuries old tradition in the autonomous region. \u003cbr/\u003eA popular spectacle since ancient Roman times, Spain is famous for its bullfighting.\u003cbr/\u003e\"El Juli\" is one of the most famous matadors in Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Madrid born bullfighter made an appearance at Barcelona's only major bullfighting ring, the Monumental Arena, on July 18th, 10 days before the Catalan parliament was due to vote on a ban on bullfighting on July 28.\u003cbr/\u003eIf approved, Catalonia would become the second Spanish region to ban bullfighting after the Canary Islands did so in 1991.\u003cbr/\u003e\"El Juli\" says that you can't take away the right of people to enjoy bullfights.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, we have to wait and see. But today I can see here that Catalonia is more alive than ever as a bullfight region. This is a wonderful arena. To ban bullfights is to ban freedom. To take away the freedom so people can do what they like,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eOutside the bullring animal rights protesters are making their cause heard.\u003cbr/\u003eLluis Villacorta has been protesting outside the arena for the past six years.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that he wants the ban on bullfighting to be implemented immediately.\u003cbr/\u003e\"First I want to say that we have been here for six years. We are against it,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a working class neighbourhood of Barcelona the next generation of bullfighters are learning the art.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year eight pupils are training to become professional bullfighters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe school has been teaching the art of bullfighting for twelve years with an average of 20 pupils each year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe law says a professional bullfighter must be at least 16 years of age.\u003cbr/\u003eAlejandro Benito is an 18-year-old high school student from central Catalonia.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has been training for a year following his childhood dream.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Whether bullfights are banned or not, my future looks bleak. We don't know what the future holds,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the first half of the 20th century Barcelona had three bullfighting arenas.\u003cbr/\u003eToday only one survives.\u003cbr/\u003eThe old \"Arenas de Barcelona\", which closed in1977, is soon to reopen as a multi cinema complex and shopping mall.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal resident Francisco Velayoz says he thinks bullfighting should survive in Catalonia.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think there should be a bullfight arena in Barcelona so people who like it could go and see it. And those who don't like it then they have this other arena that will be soon open as a cinema complex and shopping mall so they can come to amuse themselves,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eBut not everyone agrees.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am totally against bullfights here in Barcelona. I think this law is great. Animals shouldn't suffer like that in order to amuse people. I don't think is fair. I support the law totally,\" says Carmela Dulli.\u003cbr/\u003eThe green valleys of Southern Catalonia are home to several bull ranches.\u003cbr/\u003eRamaderia Mur is a typical mid-size Spanish ranch.\u003cbr/\u003eOn its 60 acres of land 200 cattle are grown, fed and bred, 15 of them are fighting bulls.\u003cbr/\u003eRaising a bull until it reaches five years of age and is ready to fight is an expensive process that costs an estimated �6,000 (US$ 7,700).\u003cbr/\u003eManuel Diaz is the owner of Mur Ramaderia ranch.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explains that as the financial crisis has already taken its toll with 50 % fewer bullfights in 2009, compared to the previous season.\u003cbr/\u003eThe approval of the ban would be another blow to the bull business.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most bull breeders in Catalonia would go bankrupt. Either people who like bullfights or people who don't,\" says Diaz.\u003cbr/\u003eAt first matadors were on horseback with men on foot using capes to position the bulls.\u003cbr/\u003eThen at some point the men on foot became the focus of attention and the spectacle evolved into modern bullfighting. \u003cbr/\u003eThe level of applause a matador receives is based on his bravery and how close he gets to the bull's horns. \u003cbr/\u003eThe matador swings the red cap in front of an average 460kg beast.\u003cbr/\u003eThe colour-blind bull goes instinctively for the cloth because is large and it swings and not because of its red colour.\u003cbr/\u003eA \"corrida\" (bullfight) usually requires six bulls to be killed by three matadors with each encounter lasting about 15 minutes.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike domestic bulls, fighting bulls don't need to be trained to charge (run at the matador).\u003cbr/\u003eThey charge for the first time once they are in front of the matador.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the bull has been lanced by horsemen and men on foot with \"banderillas\" (sharp barbed sticks) the last stage of the fight begins.\u003cbr/\u003eThe matador hides the estoque (speer) with the red cape until the bull is ready to be killed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe matador encourages the bull to charge and pass him several times by waving the red cape.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter this dance the matador aims his weapon over the bull's horns, plunging the blade between its shoulder blades into the heart.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the bull is incapacitated it is killed with a stab in the neck using a small dagger.\u003cbr/\u003eThen the bull is towed out of the arena dragged by horses.\u003cbr/\u003eBullfight season in Spain takes place during late spring and summertime.\u003cbr/\u003eThe current law in Catalonia forbids killing or torturing animals in public, with the only exception of bulls.\u003cbr/\u003eEver since Medieval times the wealthy region of Catalonia has sought to gain independence from the Spanish crown.\u003cbr/\u003eThis desire has steadily been on the increase after 40 years of repression during General Franco's dictatorship when bullfights were often seen as a unifying national pastime.\u003cbr/\u003eConstruction of new arenas has been forbidden since 2003 as well as restricting access to children under 14 from going to
