candidate from the ruling conservative Arena Party.\u003cbr/\u003eMauricio Funes, a former TV news anchor, has provided the FMLN with an acceptable and modern candidate, elevating their chances of winning.\u003cbr/\u003eHis candidacy has not been without controversy however, with opponents accusing him of allying himself with Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua.\u003cbr/\u003eFunes denies he is seeking to join a leftist movement led by Chavez, but says he will reach out to \"his brothers in the region.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHis rival, Arena Party candidate Rodrigo Avila has repeatedly raised the prospect of El Salvador falling under the tutelage of Venezuela.\u003cbr/\u003eEl Salvador has been a close US ally and rightists say a leftist victory could affect the country's relationship with Washington. \u003cbr/\u003eThe FMLN has tried to allay any such fear.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile the head of the Organisation of American States observers delegation, Gustavo Fernandez, said authorities have met most of the organisation's recommendations for the elections, and said the observer mission would remain vigilant.\u003cbr/\u003eA heavy turnout is expected throughout the country on Sunday, with almost four (m) million voters expected at the polls.\u003cbr/\u003eThe elections in the sharply divided Central American state will likely bring back memories of the brutal civil war of the 1980s, signs of which have faded, but not been completely erased.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the small hamlet of Santa Isabel, which lies in the shadow of Guazapa Volcano, a front-line in the civil war just 40 miles (60 kilometres) from the capital San Salvador, former guerillas are reflecting on the changes since the war.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are small farmers now, tilling their fields and raising their children in the shadow of events which changed their lives 25 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, yes, here in the farm sector the first thing we look for is a win and help for the agricultural sector, it's what has been ignored since the war,\" says Israel Arnulfo Quiroz.\u003cbr/\u003eQuiroz is bitter the land reform he fought for during almost six years as an FMLN guerrilla on the steep slopes of Guazapa Volcano never took place, and hopes if the FMLN wins, the promise of land redistribution will finally
