found little to do except ferry international aid piling up at Istanbul airport.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ships, with their ability to produce hundreds of thousands of gallons of drinking water and their on-board hospitals, will provide vital support as Turkey struggles to cope with the massive relief effort.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first unit of U-S Marines flew over the Turkish coast near Izmit and saw for themselves the devastation wrought by last week's huge earthquake.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Marines came from the U-S-S Kearsarge, which is part of the amphibious group which includes the U-S-S Ponce and the U-S-S Guston Hall.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group sailed from Spain four days ago, arriving on Monday morning in the Sea of Marmara off Istanbul.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Marines were helicoptered to shore from the U-S-S Kearsarge.\u003cbr/\u003eBut once on land they found little to do except help transport international aid from Istanbul airport.\u003cbr/\u003eAmerican aid, including two-thousand-100 Marines, four operating rooms and 17 intensive care beds, arrived too late to help the victims of last week's earthquake that killed more than 12-thousand people.\u003cbr/\u003eNearly all those wounded have already received treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir arrival was seen more as a symbolic gesture of American support for its Turkish ally.\u003cbr/\u003eThe U-S ambassador to Turkey said a first step would be using some of the assault ship's 26 helicopters to ferry aid to areas where roads have been damaged.\u003cbr/\u003eBut one of Taskforce Avid Response's immediate tasks will be to provide drinking water.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith its ability to generate 220-thousand gallons of drinking water a day and with portable purification units used by the Marines, the ship and its helicopters
