Close of technician inserting prepared follicles into the transplant area of Shaw's head\u003cbr/\u003eA British man has become the first in Europe to have a hair transplant using a robot.\u003cbr/\u003eThe robot is set to transform the effectiveness and success rate of transplants according to the Hollywood surgeon who's introducing the machine to the continent following years of trials. \u003cbr/\u003eLike many men going a little thin on top, Patrick Shaw has been watching his hair recede on the hairline around his face and he's worried about the onset of balding. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the UK's Department of Health he is one of 6.5 million British men who experience hair loss. \u003cbr/\u003eMost men have some hair loss by the age of 60 and for most this is a natural part of the aging process.\u003cbr/\u003eBut some men start experience hair loss from their teenage years and the balding can have an impact on a man's feeling of masculinity. \u003cbr/\u003eAs a staff member of Ziering Medical, Shaw is being allowed to become the first in Britain the try out the new robot.\u003cbr/\u003eThe start of the process is much the same.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hair is clipped short.\u003cbr/\u003eThe donor and graft sites are prepared and injected with anaesthetic. \u003cbr/\u003eShaw says he has no feeling and no pain.\u003cbr/\u003eAged 38 Shaw is not considerably bald, but says he's be increasingly concerned by the progressive retreat of the hairline on his forehead.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"I've accidently had my hair cut short, very short in the past, you know when you've gone to the hairdresser and asked for a short hair cut and they've literally taken it all off and I hated the way I looked. That was the part I thought, once it goes (the hair) it's gone.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn another room he is placed face down by the robot.\u003cbr/\u003eA grid with sensors is strapped to his head and the surgeons are able to start identifying with are the best follicles to extract.\u003cbr/\u003eThe technique is called follicular unit extraction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe surgical team here says they're combining the artistry of the surgeon with the mechanical consistency and efficiency of the robot.\u003cbr/\u003eIt enables the surgeon to choose and select the appropriate grafts, sets precise angles at which the extraction takes place by measuring accurately the angle at which the graft is sitting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe robot is being introduced by US surgeon Craig Ziering. \u003cbr/\u003eHe consulted with the robot's manufacturer to develop the machine.\u003cbr/\u003eThe original trials were held in the US before the company was given Federal Drug Agency approval for use.\u003cbr/\u003eZiering is now an advocate of the robot.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"What's  so important is, the procedure and the differences between a strip procedure and an FUE (follicular unit extraction) procedure is just how we harvest the graft. With the robot we're able to get excellent grafts therefore the natural results is what the patient gets and that's what the patient wants.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn a strip method the whole section of hair is removed from the donor site and then the follicles are sectioned off.\u003cbr/\u003eThis way the surgeon can see around the follicle, but the patient is left with a scar on the donor site.\u003cbr/\u003eThis technique according to Ziering, give the patient the benefit of an FUE procedure, with the success of the strip technique without any need for a large linear scar.\u003cbr/\u003eZiering \"We're able to harvest successfully without damaging the grafts, probably at an increased rate of 50 percent compared to the hand method. \u003cbr/\u003eIt means they can go in a the precise angle and depth needed to ensure the follicle is not damaged.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat's more it's a machine, so it doesn't suffer from the strain and fatigue that surgeons may succumb to.\u003cbr/\u003eThis transplant is being completed in one day.\u003cbr/\u003eWithout a robot it may take several trips to the surgeon before a patient has completed enough grafts for the appearance they're seeking. \u003cbr/\u003eThe surgical team at this London polyclinic believe the new technique can double the chances of implants taking root
