The sessions are held weekly...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003ePushing off at a skateboarding class - which aims to not only be enjoyable, but also therapeutic. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Everyday Skate\" is the name of the project running here in Auckland for children with learning difficulties. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sessions are held weekly at a local school.\u003cbr/\u003eThose enrolled are aged between seven and 12 and come to the class with a range of conditions - including dyspraxia, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), high-functioning Autism or Asperger's syndrome and sensory processing disorder.\u003cbr/\u003eGabe is 12-years-old and has been coming to the sessions since they started in July 2013.  \u003cbr/\u003eA veteran of the programme he now rides his own long board which he got for his birthday.\u003cbr/\u003eOccupational therapist Carolyn Lotawa from \"Everyday OT\" is behind the Everyday Skate programme along with OnBoard Skate School owner Steve Hodges.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pair has devised a skate boarding programme which helps these children learn how to skateboard while having therapy along the way.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring each session, those taking part work on getting good balance on the board, finding rhythm in their foot work and enjoying the sense of gliding as the board moves along.  \u003cbr/\u003eAll of these small movements are regarded as being beneficial to overall development and participation in everyday activities at school and home.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are encouraged to push themselves and try through repetition.  \u003cbr/\u003eMaking mistakes, persevering and building resilience to acquire new skateboard techniques are all part of the programme.\u003cbr/\u003eThe children are paired up with an experienced skate boarder who acts as peer mentor for the lesson.  \u003cbr/\u003eOccupational therapy students take part in the sessions to encourage the children to challenge themselves during the sessions. \u003cbr/\u003eLotawa, the registered therapist, and the students ensure that the children remain regulated and meet the \"just right challenge\" during each session.\u003cbr/\u003eLotawa says the programme offers children a range of different skills.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Skateboarding offers children an opportunity to be part of a group but not part of a team. It offers them an opportunity to practise a skill base and achieve skill mastery in a sanctioned way to have accidents and to make mistakes. Because that's what skateboarding is all about, skill mastery and skateboarding is, you make mistakes, you keep going until you make mistakes and then you get it,\" she explains.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So it allows the kids to be freer in the way they experience a leisure activity, it also allows them to self-regulate better. So if they are feeling overwhelmed or they are about to go into meltdown - you go into any skate park and you watch kids they are always sitting out. They always go hard out and then they sit out. You can't do that on a basketball court or a soccer field but you can in skateboarding.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe children in this programme have been learning to skate over 14 sessions and are said to be making great progress. \u003cbr/\u003eLotawa says skateboarding gives them the chance to participate in a mainstream sport in a therapeutic way.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot of these kids don't fit mainstream programmes because they find working in a team difficult. They don't necessarily read social cues particularly well which is a big emphasis in team sport. Following rules can be quite tricky for kids. They interpret them as very literally,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Daniel Sutton is a senior lecturer in mental health at the Department of Occupational Science and Therapy at Auckland University of Technology (AUT).\u003cbr/\u003eHe says children, who have conditions such as ADHD or are on the autistic spectrum, can benefit from skateboarding in a variety of ways.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It works socially, there are aspects of identity, of being part of a peer group, being able to skateboard and learning social skills through interacting while skating.
