Before the  floods it was more than twice that.\u003cbr/\u003eDue to the flooding - much of the rice is of a poor standard.\u003cbr/\u003eTimes are so hard workers now sift through the rice stalks to see if there is any more.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the proud spirit of the North Koreans has not been crushed, this woman is wrapping  up sweet potatoes as a gift to an aid agency official hoping she might be able to help  her plight.    \u003cbr/\u003eThe floods have done more than just ruin the crops. Thousands of lives have been lost  over the past two years.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far there have been no official reports of death from starvation. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in October, South Korean President Kim Young-sam asserted that one thousand  North Koreans are starving to death every day.\u003cbr/\u003eAid officials say that figure may be exaggerated but the situation is dire.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is so bad that for the first time in its history this proud country, which has always  flaunted its self sufficiency, has appealed to international aid agencies to help feeds its  people.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years North Korea has only been able to produce three and a half million tons  of staple grain.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis is well below the four point 8 million tons needed to meet its people's nutritional  needs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe other crippling factor is that now only 20 per cent of the country is arable land.  Water erosion has stripped the land.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat was once lush farmland has been covered with rocks and sand, swept across the  country by the raging floods.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials say it will take several years for the land to recover.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only thing the sand can be used for is to help rebuild river embankments that have  been destroyed by flooding.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's back breaking work carried out by everyone who can help, even the army has been  called in.\u003cbr/\u003eAs part of its relief operation Caritas will supply the people with fourteen hundred tons of  rice in its food-for-work programme.\u003cbr/\u003eA shortage of food is not the country's only problem. As the winter rolls on the bitterly  cold weather starts to bite.\u003cbr/\u003eFamilies live in houses without windows, with only plastic sheeting to protect them from  the elements.\u003cbr/\u003eSchool life isn't any easier. There is very little heating and with a shortage of electricity,  classrooms are often dark as well as cold.\u003cbr/\u003eHow to survive with very little is now taught at school,\u003cbr/\u003eAt Pyongyang's vocational training school, these students are practising designs for  packaging.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile others are recycling paper so they can produce notebooks to sell.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the foreseeable future looking bleak, international agencies are warning nearby  countries to be prepared for a mass exodus of North Koreans this winter.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea, Pyongyang,  Kaesong, Kwangwon, December 7/ 8\u003cbr/\u003eDecember 7:\u003cbr/\u003e1.
