population of 48,000, Faroese culture and traditions are at the heart of every community.\u003cbr/\u003eEach year families across the 18 islands gather in the mountains ready for the annual sheep slaughter and wool collection called 'fletta'  (killing the sheep, taking the skin off and cutting). \u003cbr/\u003eThe Faroes islands means the  \"Sheep Islands\". \u003cbr/\u003eEach autumn, from the 11th - 20th of October thousands of islanders across 18 islands can be seen in the mountain herding the sheep down to the villages ready for slaughter.\u003cbr/\u003eMany islanders have normal daily jobs as carpenters, bank clerks, bus drivers or public servants.\u003cbr/\u003eBut most still keep sheep in the mountains for their own household use.\u003cbr/\u003eIslanders believe raising or catching what they eat keeps them in touch with nature and keeps life interesting and varied. \u003cbr/\u003eHeini Hatun, a local business man, who has three sheep is helping to catch the flock. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the best way to catch the rams is by holding onto the horns so they loose power.\u003cbr/\u003eHatun says this tradition is part of the cycle of nature here. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are no organised slaughterhouses for sheep in the Faroes, so the islanders must slaughter and butcher the animals themselves. \u003cbr/\u003eSlatted sheds and empty house basements are used as temporary slaughterhouses.\u003cbr/\u003e'Fletta' remains a big social event and young and old are involved in the slaughtering process.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Eysturoy, local historian and a Faroe Islands Enterprise Guide says slaughtering of the lambs is traditional. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the sheep are only here because of their meat. \u003cbr/\u003eEysturoy says Fletta takes place in the middle of October when the schools have a winter vacation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe whole family including the children help with the slaughtering.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery part of the slaughtered sheep is used including the wool.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wool is cleaned, spun and crafted into traditional Faroese clothes.\u003cbr/\u003eEysturoy says the Faroese people like to use everything nature gives them.\u003cbr/\u003eQuatrain a Neystabo, was taught to knit by her grandmother.\u003cbr/\u003eNeystabo says the Faroese people have been knitting for hundreds of years, a skill passed down from generation to generation. \u003cbr/\u003eOrla K, is a local designer and shop owner. \u003cbr/\u003eAll her clothes are made from the wool collected from the sheep off the mountains.\u003cbr/\u003eOrla K says export to countries like Japan will continue to grow as demand increases.\u003cbr/\u003eJoannes Eidesgaard, the Prime Minister of the Faroe islands says that the islands' economy suffers from a lack of recognition in the global economy and he says the country needs to raise its profile in order to compete. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Faroe Islands are an autonomous
